X5 length increased, legroom and cargo space reduced. WTH?
Yes I've ordered the X5 but the legroom and cargo space is lame. 2018 cargo space is quite a bit bigger. My shorter 2013 Lexus RX350 has 3.3" more legroom front and back combined than the G05. Where did the interior expansion go? Yes it's a tad wider than the 2018 but it's legroom and cargo space that counts regarding comfort and function.
Word is BMW didn't want to compete with the new X7 so they gave up the ability to take advantage of more length in the 2019 X5. Legroom and most other aspects are the same in both cars. The X7 has more cargo space. Last edited by Mark609; 01-05-2019 at 04:51 PM.. |

Feels big to me and I am 6’2” 200lbs. It’s bigger usable space than my last Summit. I did the family huge suitcases to test and it’s bigger storage than the Summit. This means my family of 4 can travel for a month to Florida with all our required gear.
Extra space went shoehorning this in. Not a factor for Lexus. |

I'm coming from the a 2017 Discovery that I may be giving to my wife when it comes back from the body shop. And while I certainly notice the size difference with the G05, it's a very functional use of space. Could be a hair wider inside, but a but a nice reachable length with the tailgate down - and that's essential in the mountains when the car is constantly filthy. 176 Skis fit just fine inside - any longer would have to lay crossed. And I appreciate the shorter car in general in the garage - the external split tailgate a major space saver over a full clamshell like the Discovery.
Ever since the demise of the LR4, I've pushed bikes to the toe hitch. There isn't an SUV on the market that I'd want to own and drive daily that can hold two large 29" wheel bikes with wide bars. So better to just go smaller and have something more fun to drive.. We'll see how the BMW Off Road pack holds up. Super annoyed how quickly the suspension wants to lower. Latest Gen LR's don't lower until you reach 50MPH. Far bigger complaint for me than the general smaller interior size.... |

I hope that once you get it you will be happy and it will be big enough for you and your family. Your post suggests that BMW purposely made the X5 inefficient spacewise to make room for the X7 (your X8) and that doesn't sound right. You might want to check the source. |

I took all the stuff out of my F15 and put it in my G05 and can't tell the difference space seems the same in the back and has the under floor storage that my F15 didn't have (because of 3rd row), so actually feels like it has more now.

I mean, unless you buy into the theory that BMW purposely made the G05 inefficient spacewise to make the X7 more appealing, that the space from adding an inch to the length of the car had to go somewhere. Right? |

Start at about 9:45. This was one of the first reviews and my experience was the same. I did not compare with a F15; also I wish G05 had sliding second row seats as standard. |

https://www.topspeed.com/cars/car-ne...-ar181422.html ".....It’s hard to tell why and Bimmer’s probably the only one who can answer that question. Is this a simple mistake, or is it part of a bigger plan by BMW to create a clear distinction between the X5 and the X7? ...." "....It’s easy to look at the numbers and say that BMW messed up. But read between the lines, and you’ll realize that this could have been an intentional move on the German automaker’s part because of the presence of the BMW X7. Had the X5 actually increased its cargo space as the expectation goes, it could have done so at the expense of the bigger X7, which, by the way, is the model that the company is touting as its flagship SUV unit...." With the exception of the cargo space the X5 and X7 are quite identical in many ways especially regarding the interior design. |
