Elsewhere I read M cars won't have the full 8.5 features b/c of the way the M layout or graphics are more complex. Still for the price you think the M cars would get this imp feature. I am frustrated about this topic.
It is not due to the head unit as they are using high head 5. My guess is that it is due to the various M specific features and then not having enough time to handle those before intro. I would think the M’s should get the full feature set 8.5 within the next year or so.

They release three major version updates three times a year (April, July and November) but unfortunately OTAs have not always followed a similar schedule.

Any specific date for 8.5 to be officially out? Hoping to know two birds out with one trip to the dealer in 2 weeks..

8.5 has been in the dealers' hands for almost two months so if you can talk your dealer into installing it you will be good to go. Keep in mind that BMW has told dealers that they will not be paid for installing it unless it is part of a warranty repair so many, if not most, dealers won't install it unless the customer pays for it. Some are offering goodwill updates though.

Why would you pay for this update? Isn't it free like every other update?

No updates are free from the dealer unless part of a warranty repair. Some do them for free for customer goodwill but that is not BMWNA's policy as far as being charged/paid. OTAs of course are free.

Service departments have labor rates and bill by the hour. If BMW NA won’t pay for the labor for an update that is not required because there is no warranty issue, then you are relying on goodwill which dealers don’t have. So you either pay for their hour to do it, or you wait until it comes for free OTA.

I'm not following, my vehicle just did an update the other day on it's own.

OTA's never update on their own. You need to follow certain steps and then confirm that you want to do an update and it takes about 20 minutes. More than likely it was a map update or an Apps and Services update.

We are talking about getting the iDrive update from the dealer, that is not free unless as described above.

Got ya. So these are bigger updates than maps and simple updates obviously. If these large updates come free later on, I don't see myself ever paying for them and wasting money.

Based on my previous experience (X5 MY´19 = 1 OTA over 4.5 years) and the current (X5 MY '24 = 0 OTA and 0 Expectations since May) they are really lagging the market. A simple $200 smartphone gets updated almost everyday hence my comment that they don't have the manpower , knowledge, expertise .et al to perform OTA updates to their cars and it doesn't seem that they are improving at all.

There is no doubt that BMW's OTA process is terrible. I personally always recommend folks take the position that there are no OTA's for BMW and if they happen to have one successfully install then it is a bonus. They have been working on it for years, at least hopefully they have, and the process is no better than when it first came out. They know how bad it is, that was evidenced. by them changing SIB 090321 and considering any vehicle that has at least 07/2021.00 to be up to date and no longer having remote software updates available. They evidently had to pay out too much to dealers to do the update so instead of making sure the problem was fixed they stopped payment and said the vehicles no longer should get an update.

Anyone experience a OTA to 8.5 in the past couple of days? I did and must reconfigure CarPlay and associated apps. Just to be clear….I already had 8.5 and it was updated.

Oh ok...yeah I still have 8.0 (03/2023.65). Thought maybe they started to roll out OTA updates to 8.5. I guess not yet

This was the issue I ran into the other week with them stating that they do not have it yet and my car showing that the update was available under the recall section on the mybmw site... I may have to talk to someone else there and see whats going on..
