Defective paint
I picked up my new BMW X5 40i. I was very angry and disappointed to see some defective paint at the lower driver-side bumper. It appears paint was just not fully applied in that area, but seems to have been clear coated though. So pissed. Has anyone experienced this on a $100k vehicle?

Wow. This is why I am going to do a thorough inspection of my car before delivery to see if i need paint correction. It sucks. However since this is a bumper. Hopefully they can send another one to the dealer. Wont help to complain and get some $$ in return

I had no such issues with my old 2015 3 series, not one, solid as a brick. Yet both my X series cars has had multiple trips to garage for warranty work and now a potential trip to get 1/4 of the car resprayed. Not happy at all, maybe I'm just unlucky but it seems paint work defects is not as rare as one would think. |

That's quite a bit of marring on the paint too, even for a new car. Plastic already scratched up. Looks like something's been done to the bumper?
I've found their paint work to be pretty mediocre. In one fine example, a bulging dried droplet of paint on the rear upper boot hatch was so bulbous it created a dent on the lower boot hatch from the pressure applied with the boot closed. |

So the dealer fully admits this is a factory paint defect. They suggested a re-paint or live with it. Unfortunately out here in the sticks the BMW-certified body shop has spotty quality according to my detailer. Poor blending, much softer paint, and slight color variation compared to factory. Any replacement bumper that is ordered separately comes unpainted and sprayed locally btw. I asked them for a third option that preferably left me with a factory painted bumper. They proposed a that the defective bumper be swapped on my new custom x5 for one from another new Black Sapphire Metallic x5 in their inventory (then they will just repaint my original and never tell the new owner, I suspect). My detailer feels this is the best option from a list of bad options.

It can happen on a $250k vehicle and I have personally seen it. Considering most companies are blaming anything and everything on Covid these days as a socially acceptable excuse. I would take a swapped bumper on the lot. I would want to inspect that one as well as robots do the painting so mistakes are rare but might be more than one with identical issues until quality control fixed the issue. It shouldn’t have made it through your dealers final prep work and the fact the dealer finds this acceptable and wants to pass it along to another customer doesn’t speak well for their integrity and I would be very cautious when having my vehicle in for service.

Hard to tell with all the water on it, but it looks like the bumper had been damaged and then oversprayed? Could be dealer or even at the port....

My car is covered in damaged on collect. I don’t think I saw a car worse than it. Even had 3D claw marks.
To be honest I gave up trying to get it fixed; it’s leased so I don’t really care to be honest. But normally it would kill me however my luck on the last 4 cars I’ve had have been completely faulty resulting in a full refunds (Porsche/mercedes/Bmw). Personally I think BMW paintwork is terrible and thin; always has been in comparison to other cars of mine. |

I'd take the bumper swap and ensure the shade matches and/or have the bumper resprayed by a good body shop (at their cost) |

Your bumper was resprayed after the factory. Either from transportation or at the dealership, it must have been damaged at some point and then a shoddy quick cover up job was performed. No way Spartanburg missed that big of a spot. Of course your dealer will blame the factory.

Most likely done at VDC/Port or at dealer level. It is quite common.

Just get it repainted and move on. It's the bumper, which will be full of stone chips eventually anyway.
