Option 418: Luggage Compartment cover stuck

I have the 418 Luggage Compartment Option and today the cover is stuck. The compartment door is option but I can't get it to function. None of the buttons work. Any come across this issue? It's been flawless to this point.

Ours has been flawless too. In the manual, it has some instructions setting it back on the track if it comes off of it. Check it and see if it has instructions for resetting the roll in the compartment.

I initialized it with the close button as per the manual. It worked but I think I let the button go too early and it's stuck again. I can't get it reinitialize. I'll give it a bit of time and try it again. Frustrating.

I initialized it again and now it's buggered up and won't do anything. It's stuck in this position.

There was a thread on the luggage package a while back and someone said it got stuck or off its track. Can you physically grab the cover and manually pull it forward so as to disconnect it from its track deliberately? Then use the buttons or reinitialize it again and see if it reconnects with itself. I forget the details but seem to remember it needed manual intervention to get it back on track.

I believe its designed such that if it encounters an obstacle during its travel, it won't break or damage itself but may pop out of its carrier and needs manual intervention.

I got it to work coming across and retracting when the truck is open except it wont go down into the storage part. Something isn't right so I don't want to mess with it. It has to go to the dealership next week for something else. I'll have them figure it out. For now it comes across and retracts.

Something to note, if you have to reinitialize it using the down button, you will need to wait for a good 15 mins before redoing it.

I decided to take another shot at it this evening by disengage it from the track and redoing the whole process by snapping it back into place. I wish I took pictures. It's pretty easy and only took a minute or so. Works like a charm.

The local dealership has a new 50i with the luggage package- and a broken plastic piece. I don't know if it was a customer-caused failure, design problem, or simple oops.

Do you know what piece was broken?

I can imagine a bit of frustration as the root cause.

I've seen a lot of these broken on brand new cars on the dealer lots. It makes me nervous as to longevity as I specd this option on my X5.

When I first started researching the purchase of my car..... I watched several videos on this and thought to myself "WOW that is cool..... but I don't trust the longevity of something like that".

It just looked over-engineered, and easily "breakable"

Not that BMW won't fix it.... they will.... but how much TIME will I have to devote to bringing my new car in for repairs? How much time will I spend in a substandard loaner? How many times will it break?

I'm curious how many people this has happened to? I wonder how many will have these issues in the future?

This was the first time since we had the X5 and it really was easy to fix. It took the same amount of time as if you were removing the regular one and storing it. I was a little flustered at the time but it's easy. I also manhandled that thing and surprisingly I found it to be a durable construction. Think that was a $300 or $500 option...can't remember. I would order it again.

So now I'm wondering if the word "broken" in the context of these posts really means not working, off its track or something more along those lines rather than broken pieces of plastic, sheared off cable ends, etc.

I know the G05 has a storage place under the cargo floor for the manual cargo cover. I've never tried removing one but I know its a PITA to remove mine on my 2011 X3. Just getting it unlocked is the PITA, then for me, I have to find a place to put it as my X3 has no facility for it.
I like the idea of the electric one in the G05, not so much the little rubber grippers on the cargo floor but I like the auto part of the cargo cover. However, if its somewhat easy to "break", and I don't mean just coming off its track or cable, then I'd go with the manual one.

Comments?

I bought the cargo mat which covers the rubber strips. In my particular case the disappearance of the cargo cover by a press of button is very convenient for my wife and I. Also I use the nets that are throughout the cargo area.

We find the grippy things to be great. When the hatch is open it's easy to slide something in or out because the rubber part drops down a bit so you slide on the metal part. Once the hatch closes the rubber part moves up and does a good job of holding boxes, luggage and such. For packages, the cargo-net works well too. It's a bit beefier than the ones we've had in other cars.

I'm not sure which I like better; the self-closing cover or the grippy things on the floor.

Ok, any clue as to how much weight before the cargo grippy strips can no longer rise?

I don't know if there is a weight limit, except one that would cause the floor to collapse. The grippy things don't lift the cargo, they just push against it. My guess is whatever the mechanism is that lifts the grippy things, has just a little bit of give built into it.

I haven't tried it with anything particularly heavy yet but next time I'm moving a box of gold bars between my mansions I'll report back

If you can look at the system in one of the cars on the dealer's lot. Unfortunately, when we were looking there wasn't a car on the lot with that option but the sales manager said it was a really good option to get so we went for it.

The G01 X3 now has a storage space for the cargo cover.

It's been working great so far, and I really like it.
I would order again without hesitation.

This. Not having to mess with a cargo cover is very convenient, and loading tall items just requires a push of a button. I contrast this with my Q7, which didn't even come with a cover - separate purchase, about $250 if I recall, and nowhere to store it.

I agree and I also thought is was good value.

Had a similar problem with my luggage compartment cover not working and wanted to drop this in for future reference should anyone else have an issue with theirs.
