A bit of solder on the pin works well to lengthen it, just make sure the remove the pin from the adapter before putting heat to it. |

When I tried using a double USB adapter in the lighter socket, the power failed to it every time something touched it. Which, being in the middle of that cramped storage compartment, was constant. Maybe you should try that - get an adapter and run the cord to a rear usb. |

I used this approach on the charger that I specifically wanted to use in the front 12V outlet. Thank you for that. Pathetic/arrogant of BMW to not deal with that design properly (it would a different story if other cars got this wrong, but they clearly get this effortlessly right, so it is just BMW). Regarding the front USB A port, there isn't a good reason not to use that for an accessory other than a phone if that accessory accepts USB power. However, for an iPhone, that port is not just a charger and it triggers the silly and disruptive iPod functionality. There might be a way to permanently turn that off on the iPhone, but it's simpler to use another, pure power, charger in the front 12V outlet. The front USB A port's best use is for additional music storage as has been discussed:

With a drink and other stuff, they are completely obstructed and require running wires all over the place. The armrest socket would require leaving the top open all of the time, unless the object I’m charging can live in that storage compartment. I have the TomTom connected to the back of the headrest because I want the wire out of the way. Works fairly well with the wire tucked under the handhold at the top of the drivers door. Yes, still using the TomTom. The nav in the car is awful AND I can see the TRUE speed using the TomTom. It also gives me much better routes than the in-car nav AND responds MUCH better to voice commands. My previous car was a 2011 Highlander. I chose the middle level optioned car because I didn’t want to pay an extra $4K for the navigation (and a few other useless electronic upgrades). Plus, with the TomTom squeezed as far as possible to the left (on the windshield) I can see it much better than my dash, which is mostly obstructed by the steering wheel. Yes, I should’ve gotten the HUD, but I didn’t. I’ll get accustomed to the dash displays eventually, but for now I mostly watch the TomTom. Last edited by natahoa; 06-15-2019 at 12:52 PM.. |

Wondering if you had a photo of how much you shaved off on your 360. I have same issue and want to see how far up and how much you carved out to get it to work. Have a new X5 same issue |

FYI I soldered to the tip of the lighter adapter on the escort plug a millimeter or two of solder. This fixed it and allowed the tip to make contact. Worked in my new X5 and my M2.
On the X5 gesture control sets off the laser so moved the detector high up on windshield to the right and above the rear view mirror. Worked so far |

I just found this thread as I was having the same issue with a Escort Max radar detector’s plug not fitting not fitting. Rather than buying something to fit in the lighter socket or shaving down the plug, I decided to buy a USB A to Cigarette Lighter Socket Adapter. Here’s the product link:

This alternate unit below specifies 0.8A on 12V, which is 9.6W and higher. Might be a better choice, but the radar detector should indicate power requirement, so this can be checked before purchase. And, since all these adapters are made in China, of course, you have to usually take the specs with a grain of salt. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01J67JIOQ/

..... wow
Glad I found this thread. Have 2021 BMW M440 and the Beltronics 360 didn’t work in the cigarette/12v but I’ve verified the cord and radar are fine (tried on other vehicles). This left my dealership scratching their head with no solution. Ugh.

it definitely appears to be the tolerance of the design of the device's connector itself and how it mates inside the contacts of the vehicle's 12V port, and not all of the same vehicle's 12V ports are the same! i have two identical 2-port USB 12V adapters. the front 12V port doesn't like the adapters pressed in too far (i lose power to my external dashcam during bumpy moments), whereas the rear 12V port has no such issue.
i need to find an adapter for the front port that stays in contact the whole time. |

There are actually two standard versions of 12vdc sockets, one has a smaller diameter than the other, but only slightly. Some plugs are too tight, or have a flare at the top that doesn't allow them to fully seat so that the center contact can make a good connection. Sometimes, filing that flare slightly on the plug is all it takes to let it go a little deeper into the socket for a good connection. If you have a soldering iron, you might try putting a blob of solder on the end, but that could mess the plug up (usually doesn't, but it could!). The bottom nub is spring loaded, but if that isn't depressed a little by being in far enough, things can be intermittent, or not make contact at all.

My wife travels in her car for work. Her previous car was a 2014 Mazda CX-5 that she used a powered desk in the passenger seat. When we bought the X5 it no longer worked and I thought it was broken. I found out the X5’s plug receptacle is slightly tighter preventing the plug from going all the way in bottoming out. The desk was 6 years old so I removed the inverter and bought a new external one and it worked perfectly. Something must have changed in the plug specifications causing older equipment not to work in newer vehicles?

I'll post this again. I've already posted this in another thread somewhere on here. BMW has an SIB for this issue which basically does the same thing that some have posted here. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...82618-9999.pdf
