Noise from rear when going over bumps at slow speed

When I am driving <20 mph and going over bumps, I am hearing a "clack" or knocking sound coming from the rear. I've checked everything on the interior to make sure everything is secure, but I can't seem to find anything. Anyone else hearing this? I wonder if it's coming from the suspension.

Could it be a loose spare tire?

Same issue with knocking/popping noise coming from the right/passenger rear side when going over a bump, especially a sharp bump.

Built in Oct 2018. It's getting quite annoying. Have a service appointment this coming Thursday.

I'm 75% certain the popping noise is generated by the rear seat / airbag next to the door. The seat and airbag seem very loose and make popping sound when bumping on them. Definitely defective fittings or a design flaw. $70K vehicle should not produce abnormal noise like this.

Minus the noise, loving this X5 G05.

I don't have a spare, so can rule that out.

Very interested to hear what they find. Agree on abnormal noises — reason that I traded my last vehicle for the X5 after only 7 months of ownership.

I have owned 4 BMWs and every single one of them has had some sort of creak, buzz, rattle, etc. Picking up my X5 on Friday and I’m terrified it’s going to have the same issue as the others.

Have this same issue on our F15. Seems they still haven't changed the design to address this. Comes from the rear top lift.

My X3 does sometimes too, it has to be something that's shared between all of these models.

Our X5 is solid as a rock. I’m very sensitive to creaks, rattles, etc...and there are zero. Quite happy with that! Our 2016 528i that we turned in to get the X5 had 43k miles on it and also had zero creaks or rattles.

I actually have my car in service today to address this issue exactly. I hear a "clunk" sound when backing out of a driveway or even sometimes when taking a RH turn from a stop sign. It is very consistent. I have a feeling that I am going to get the old, "Customer complaint cannot be replicated, no problem found"

For what it's worth... I drive an F15 X5 35d and have not heard this sound in that vehicle. HOWEVER, I had an E92 M3 that had a horrendous clunking sound during turns... the sharper the turn, the more pronounced the clunk. Low speeds were the worst. It honestly sounded as if I had a bowling ball loose in my trunk. This was diagnosed as an issue with the differential lubricant. They changed to a different lube for the diff, and had this crazy protocol of completing approximately 30 clockwise turns followed by the same number of turns in the opposite direction. I was skeptical, but the problem went away after they performed that service.

No idea if this helps at all, but I thought I'd put it out there just in case...

I had the same issue on my E70 and after so many trips to the dealership with no luck to find the root cause, I found it myself, it was the latch where the back seat locks to secure it. On either side, in my case it was the right side, I just used the black electric tape on the metal piece, and the friction was reduced to zero, no more cluck noise. It used to drive me crazy, I know the feeling!

Had his exact same issue with my E70. Used sticky-backed felt.

I just tried this, and it seems to have worked! Did a quick test drive and didn't hear the noise. I will give it a few days to see if it solves it for good. Thank you so much for this easy fix!

Here are some pictures. I just wrapped the front and back sides of the little bracket with electrical tape.

While a little ghetto, if it works, it works! At least it's not silver duct tape!

Yes! It has been almost 2 weeks and I haven't heard the noise again since using the duct tape. Thanks to all for providing the solution!

This stuff works awesome on all kinds of squeaks and rattles. Always keep a roll on hand.

The X5 was in service last week for noise. I drove around with a BMW Tech..."unable to replicate popping / knocking noises". It was pouring rain 45 degrees (extreme cold for central Florida). The last few days were in the high 70's...the freaking knocking noises are back. Temperature induces?

I will try the electrical tape method--Thank You for the photos. But I was hearing the knocking sounds even with the back seats down. Not sure if my problem is seat latch related.

I've applied rubber weather strips to all the cheap plastic in the cargo area under the carpet. Seems like the BMW engineers spent all their time making front cabin all nice and quiet; however, they just said, "fuck it" we'll just use cheap noisy Chinese plastic molding for the under the cargo area liner. The plastic pieces make so much knocking/popping sounds when I press or push one again the other. This is where I applied lots of rubber weather strips. They work quite well as sound abatement.

Having done all that, I'm still hearing an occasional pop, but it's not as loud. I'd say it's 75% improvement.

Now I'm experiencing a new annoying noise--the moon roof liner rattles like rattle snake when it is opened all the way. It's quiet when closed (fully extended) all the way. Rattles when going over bumpy surfaces.

I just hit 1200 miles today. No other issues.

back in the day when i had my e39 the knock came from the seat catch which locked them upright from the trunk. i dipped them to achieve the same effect without losing the oem look. it resolved the issue and the seats never knocked again.

What is that you dipped them in?
