Ouch that's definitely a defective battery then. Too bad about the crease. Did bmwna make it right?

BMW NA did not, my local dealer finally agreed to at the price of not being welcome there despite doing nothing wrong so there's that

Which CTEK battery charger should I get for my M40i? Is this the one?

This just happened to me. Spent afternoon applying a layer of coating to the seats. Probably 2/3 hours with all doors open. After I'm done, locked the door and no error message. Went back to car after a couple of hours later then "Replace battery" message came on. Sounds like have to bring it back to the dealer to fix this by reading this thread. What a hassle....

Probably 3 hours is more of an accurate assessment thinking about it now. Car is only 4 days old. Arrived from USA on 20 April. Maybe battery wasn't fully charged as some suggested? I clocked around 200km so far.

Put a battery charger on it and charge it all the way up. These vehicles must have a battery tender if they sit for a long time or the electrical system is being used without the engine running. Every vehicle in my dealers showroom has a charger on them. If not, then they get the battery message.

Cool No odometer, no problem

If you have a decent GPS use that. It will show your speed.

We have a very old minivan my husband uses like a pickup. Dashboard motherboard is shot and he won’t spend to replace it, so no odometer, gas gauge, etc. wipers and lights work tho.

He refuses to use a gps for any reason. He’d rather fuss with his phone when he needs navigation. But when I drive that car anywhere I plug in my trusty gps so I can how much of a fine I’m gonna pay if I get pulled over.

I had a '94 840, had two batteries in the trunk. Shortly after buying the car I got a Limp Home tranny failure across the display, then a day or so later, other weird messages flashing at me. Took it to the dealer, they said it was simply a low battery level and upon testing the batteries, found them both pretty well shot. They replaced them both.

I said "both???", they said, yeah, this car has two. That bill was like a car payment in itself! I bought a little Battery Tender, kept the car on it when it was in the garage. Those two batteries went on to last me 14 years. Best $20 I ever spent, and heck, its only $25 now on Amazon. Lead acid batteries don't take kindly to being discharged. https://www.amazon.com/Battery-Tende...69784302&psc=1

14 years? Wow!
Thanks. Did you use alligator clip? How did you connect to car battery?

Yup, 14 yrs on the 840, 12 years on a 330i and here's my 2011 X3 with the original factory battery and how I have the battery tender connected. Love BMW for making it so easy.

I’m guessing the negative could be any metal parts, right?

Do you do this everyday?

Theoretically it could be any metal part but you just need to be sure that the metal part is electrical ground and without any sort of coating, paint, etc. BMW knows people store their cars, don't drive them much, etc and have always provided a positive terminal with a red plastic cap. For the ground, I look for some kind of terminal with a ground wire attached but have used strut mounting bolts in other cars. The battery tender will not illuminate its LED if it doesn't detect a complete circuit. Yes, I keep the X3 on the tender the whole time its in the garage cause we only use it for trips, so it sits a lot.

A bit impractical if it’s my daily driver though, unless I can find a way to make hooking up easy.

I'll never own my car long enough to go through the Factory batteries unless there's a defect, otherwise I'd hook up a tender too

A friend of mine connects his a bit differently, he has a jag, the battery is in the trunk so he used the ring lugs to attach to the battery and then just connects/disconnects via the two prong connector. He leaves his trunk lid just resting down and the wire hangs out. Takes less than one minute to disconnect and close the trunk. Sure beats having battery issues and paying for new batteries. With our newer more high tech cars, they never fully sleep.

If you guys are going the tender route, I strongly recommend the CTEK tenders over the BatteryTender brand. I have had a few issues over the years with the BatteryTender brand and have seen much better results from the CTEK smart chargers.

NOCO is also decent.

CTEK is also who makes the tenders that are branded OEM for BMW/Porsche/Ferrari/etc.

Any ideas to easily do this on a daily basis basis?

If you're driving your X5 on a daily basis, you won't need to do it. Battery tenders are mainly for cars that sit for a long time without being driven.

I’m on the same boat right now… took my M50i with 100miles to get PPF, ceramic coated and Tints. Shop had it for a little over 3 weeks. I stuck with this “replace battery” message even after i charged both batteries for 24+ hrs. BMW dealer knew right away after seeing my wrap. They called it “outside influence” which voids the warranty.. the shop is currently talking the dealership to get to replaced.. Wish I knew about these sensitive batteries ahead of time.
