Question 45e highway mpg

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Just wondering what kind of mpg people are seeing on long highway drives (especially when the battery has depleted). The 45e’s battery range will be perfect for my daily use, but once or twice a year if I drive cross-country and don’t charge overnight at hotels, I’m wondering what kind of fuel economy I can expect. I know the US EPA rating is 20 mpg combined, but they don’t list a highway estimate. I didn’t see this topic discussed before when I searched... what kind of numbers are people seeing?

That’s better than I expected! I assume it’ll improve slightly after break in, too.

Same here around 23-24 mpg. Strongly depending on the mood of the right foot.

In Germany on the Autobahn it will be much worse. But seeing your location you will probably not be driving there.

Use of the cruise control can help as it will minimize the minor speed up/slow down you'd get when just using your foot.

Around LA, you'd likely see a lot of stop and go. The vehicle is heavy. Once it's going, it's not bad. Lots of stop and go, no vehicle is great.

If you expect a lot of stop and go once you arrive, and can't plug in, there is a mode that will let you charge the batteries with the engine.

Seeing the same too.

I guess highway mpg doesn't depend as much on weight if you're not speeding up and down too much. It's more about aerodynamics so for longer distances the 45e and 40i should have similar mpg since they share the same ICE.

That was my thought/hope, that once it's cruising at highway speed it will do better than the EPA 20 mpg combined rating. For the size and weight of the 45e, I'd be pretty thrilled with 22-24 mpg highway on longer trips. My around town driving in LA will be 95% electric.

Yeah, I basically expect dismal mileage around LA. Hoping most of it is on electric (and I have solar at home). My M3 gets around 14 mpg in LA so my expectations for the 45e around town (once the battery is depleted) are not high.

It's good to hear it'll do decent highway mileage if you're cruising though. The M3 did about 400 a tank on a long road trip and it sounds like the X5 will have no problem doing that or a bit more on a long trip.

I used to get 20mpg on my twin turbo V8 e7- 5.0

so the highway mileage of the 45e is pretty much garbage.

only diesel excel on highway

They did for fuel economy. For overall engine performance and sound I prefer a BMW 6 in-line
