After I read the OP's post and before reading any reply by others my first thought was that this damage was caused by the carrier who delivered the car to you. The only thing worse than a valet jockey is a car carrier jockey especially those who transport used vehicles. If you’ve ever watched them in action you would agree. I’d go after the carrier and enlist my insurance company to do the dirty work.

Are you suggesting that the hybrid batteries somehow protect the gas tank from being punctured? I think not. With the hybrid you have the potential for a double whammy - punctured gas tank PLUS punctured batteries.

I bet you have never tried to file a claim against a transporter. Before the vehicle was off loaded from the transport the recipient would have signed a document stating that the vehicle was delivered in A1 perfect condition.

Yeah exactly; I signed a document the car was in good condition. There was no body damage; no warning lights at the time and the car started and drove fine. Unfortunately I didn’t think of inspecting underneath (honest I would’ve probably never picked up the damage since it’s hidden behind the undershield) and it was cold that day.. so didn’t use the A/C.

Shitty situation but the dealer is working with me. Not there fault seeming I just handed them this problem since it was handed to me and they are doing what they can.

Sucks this is how I got back into a BMW; my previous experience I enjoyed (335i).

I think lesson here is not to do lease takeover - too high risk.

Is it any different than buying any used car?

Fair question. Maybe - the process just feels a bit dodgier given the intermediaries. Also feel like someone getting out of a lease in that way maybe less likely to be fully transparent?

I would tend to agree. Also, buying from a reputable dealership, they would have hopefully done an inspection and noticed a major issue like that.

I would guess the general consensus is that there was no issue to be found and the damaged was caused after delivery. Given there were no issues, errors, control messages, etc. prior to that it is hard to say the damage was pre-existing.

Sure, but it'd be nicer to know that's the case because of a high quality inspection by people who know what to look for.

One would also think that if someone hit something hard enough to damage that battery they'd be like "ah, yeah, I ran over that metal thing and it made a really loud noise, that makes sense".

Yep learned my lesson. I rather just pay the depreciation cost and have had the vehicle day 1 knowing the history then go through this again..

My logic… couldn’t find a CPO 45e in Florida with less then 45k miles under $55k. So decided to look at lease assumption; found in Cali (no snow; niceee!)

11k miles
38k Buyout
2022 (2 years left of warranty)

Also if anything went wrong I could walk away at the end of the lease if we didn’t like the car or we experience the same issues we had with our 4xE (tons of recalls and Jeep dealers by me were not inclined with the product).

Eating the cost of the lease made it seem worthwhile….. but adding the cost of the repairs to this; I could’ve just gone with a CPO or possibly pay more for new but end up with more options.

I took a bath; sucks but can’t change it now and with the dump into it I’d probably buy it out if there’s no issues. Hopefully can keep this til 120k miles (5-6 years).

I’m grateful for this community; sort of made me feel not alone in this.

Excellent attitude about this. Crap happens - make some lemonade!

Been driving for 52 years, never had a gas tank issue, but, thanks for asking.
