When I tried to clean my windows the other day, one of the windshield wipers scraped the edge of the hood when I lifted it up to clean underneath it. There was no way to lift up without hitting the hood. I noticed today that I scraped the paint off when I did this.

Is this normal for the wipers to hit the hood like this? Is this happening on anyone else's G05?

To clarify this doesn't happen under normal wiper operation, only when I manually lift them off the glass as I've done with other cars I have owned.

You're supposed to turn the car off then hit the wiper stalk this puts the wipers in the changing position for cleaning and what not. they're designed to sit under the hood for aerodynamics. I hate saying this but it's user error

Good question.... I've applied a rain shield to my windshield and noticed that there is no way to lift the wiper blade out of the way - without contacting the back edge of the hood. I was gentle when I initially lifted the blade and did not damage the paint but could see how someone could easily cause damage.

Made me wonder what the program was here... I haven't looked into it further.

Interesting and good to know. Called out in the user manual I'm guessing? Just hadn't gotten around to sorting that anomaly out.

Is there a service position you are supposed to put them in first?

In other BMW's I've owned you after turning the car off completely, push up on the windshield wiper stalk for about 3-5 seconds.

I can't check for you as my G05 hasn't arrived yet.

Yes, it should work as described above when the car is off. I don't think they do it in the most intuitive way, nonetheless it's in the manual too last I saw.

Again, pardon my ignorance (and future ignorance), but what is the ‘wiper stalk’?

Inside the cabin, on the steering wheel. The lever you use to control the wipers.

What do you call it?

It's the stalk located on the right side of your wheel as seen below

The ‘wiper stalk’ is currently on the left side in my Jeep, this is going to take a lot of getting used to

You have to press the wiper stalk down and hold it there. The wipers will then swipe up and park so that you can fold them away from the glass. Once finished, press and hold down the wiper stalk and they return to normal.

See the picture for where they park in the service position. (PS you can see that my wiper blade goes too far and hits my A pillar )

Looks like for the X5 it is holding the stalk down.

Edit: Looks like it took me too long to get the screenshots and X5_CC beat me to it.

Interesting. None of the vehicles I've owned over the last 32 years had wiper blades that didn't clear the hood... Including my E70/2013 X5. I'd call it poor design, more than user error. Put a bump stop on the wiper arm where it contacts the hood.

What OP did is expected behavior... BMW changed the functionality such that, if you used it the same way 99.9% of vehicles on the planet worked, you could damage the paint.

for what it's worth the dealer might fix it because they should show people how that stuff works at pick up

I've had a few cars with the wipers like this now so for me it's normal. I completely get where you're coming from and agree which is why I think they should show people at pick up.

Maybe a touchless wash? I don't use any unless it's touchless which we don't have here so I hand wash only.

My 2012 Audi S4 was designed like this. In that car, you had to go to a setting in the MMI (Audi version of iDrive) to make the wipers come up and park so you could service them.
