So, to clean your full windshield you have to put the wipers in fold away mode, clean the windshield, put them back down against the windshield, activate the wipers so they return to the closed position thus having them wipe across your clean windshield, and then...clean the windshield again?

I can lift them up enough in the closed position to slide a towel under neath to clean the glass and clean the blades. Just be mindful how high you lift them. My Audis have always been this way so I am use to working around this design.

Was just going to mention this and you beat me, but my 11 S4 was the same wipers would hit the hood if you lifted them in home position.

See the picture for where they park in the service position. (PS you can see that my wiper blade goes too far and hits my A pillar )
Is all car manufacturers do this ?

That won't work on an X5, according to the OM you have to hold the stalk down to get them into the service position.

Nice video... How great is it that, while there is no wiper blade on it, it can snap down a break the windshield!? Just when you thought changing out the wiper blade was a walk-in-the-park ;-)

What OP did is expected behavior... BMW changed the functionality such that, if you used it the same way 99.9% of vehicles on the planet worked, you could damage the paint.
RTFM. My 1994 BMW 850CSi -- 25 years old! -- has this same functionality, and I believe it was present on even earlier ones as well. Your E70/2013 X5 also worked that way. When there are clear instructions telling you how to do something, why should BMW add an additional part to prevent you from doing something stupid? That's not a bad design, that's a dumb owner. Sorry.

Are you serious right now? Dealer should fix because you are not smart enough to understand simple things and not be able to read manual? Reminds me a "caution, hot contents" thing, people are getting dumber.

Haha - Easy there captain RTFM - if you say so. No, my E70 didn’t work that way - blades cleared the hood when pulled away. And I’m not the guy that scraped my paint off here.

BMW prevents owners from damaging paint everywhere else on the vehicle where movement of parts would cause paint contact. Why restrict how far the gas cover opens? Or the doors? Or the hood? So they don’t contact the vehicle and cause damage. Pretty easy to prevent this as well.

OP....Just use some touch-up paint where that is. You will never see it from the out side. I would bet you won’t see the mark from the inside if you touch-up the mark correctly.

On similar “live and learn” topic,.... I have seen a owner take off his Rolex and sit it on the top of his engine cover as he didn’t want to scratch it up changing a coil pack. He forgot about it and slammed his hood down on top of his Rolex and ruined his day.

This is what I would do - which reminds me, I always buy a touch up stick with each new vehicle. Haven’t done that yet. If I have a touch up stick, I won’t need it. If I don’t have one... Murphy’s law.

I never said they had to, I said they might. I'm not going to waste my time arguing with someone who can't comprehend my earlier comment.

I had an E70 and thought it worked that way, but obviously my memory is faulty. However, my basic premise is sound. BMW doesn't design the opening parameters of doors, hoods, etc with paint damage in mind. A door that opens far enough to damage the paint would be a pretty crazy door. The windshield wipers that 'park' to change the blades are designed with aerodynamics in mind. In addition to my 850CSi, my former 750il, my current 640i, and several other models do all work this way. The manual instructions are there for a reason. If someone doesn't read them, it's not BMW's fault, or a design flaw.

Here it is. The car isn't in really freshly detailed condition as you can see.

Happened to me too… they are fixing it and thanked me for making them aware. Neither the PC nor the dealer warned me or were aware that there was a special mode for the wipers to be able to be pulled away from the windshield. And there is really no resistance to raising them despite it barely scraping the paint to warn you that is about to happen.

Little off topic but how far should the wiper be from the A pillar? Mine is maybe 4 or 5 inches away. Seems so far.... How is your so to close?
