Prior X5 (or X3) owners - interim for brake jobs?
Hi - I was not planning on getting the extended service agreement as other input seemed to indicate that it's only a moderate probability of needing a full brake job before 36k. If it's relevant, I have M-Sport brakes on my ordered X5.
This week, finance manager said first brake job 'almost certain' at 20-25k. I know it's his job to sell the extended coverage, so I thought I would poll actual owners. Any experience/input would be appreciated. |

I am on my 3rd X5 and had one X3 also - the 2015 F15 went 45,400 miles on a 3 year lease, never had brakes, I am pretty sure the F25 X3 before it also didn't have brakes and it went 45k miles also. The E70 I think had brakes in the 30-35k mile range if I am not mistaken.

Why is the lifetime of these brakes so poor? When I got rid of my Honda it had over 180k miles and never needed brakes. My Acura has 135k and has not needed any. Is it due to driving very aggressively?

My dealer also said it was almost certain to need a brake job early. One thing to think about, though... I am pretty easy on brakes myself, but after using active cruise control, I can see where I might need to do a brake job earlier than if I didn't use ACC. When I'm driving myself on extended road trips, I don't use brakes much — just start coasting early when approaching cars. However, since ACC automatically maintains a certain distance, I've noticed it using brakes a lot more often than I would.

The only reason it may need brakes sooner is because it’s a higher performance ride with some weight. This is assuming you are gonna drive stupid fast all the time, hence brakes sooner. It’s sound logic but never applied to any of my high performance rides. My brakes last forever on my 911’s but that’s because I don’t ride the brakes. The M brakes are huge on the X5 so I wouldn’t worry about their lifespan. IMO the brake warranty is a scam.

Thanks for the replies, good to have confirmation of my original plan.
I drive on roads with a lot of curves and hills, but my existing SUV has managed over 45k miles without a brake maintenance and still has plenty of pad left. |

I just leased 2019 x5 40i and decided to get a full maintenance 50k/4 years, since I will be doing around 45-48k mikes in 36 months on my lease.
