Lane Departure Freak Out
Hi,
Last night was driving home on the freeway and the steering wheel kept doing little nudges left and right alternating almost every 1/2 second. I was centered in the lane. Finally just just disabled all so I could drive home. Only thing I can think of is there is a lot of salt making the freeway look white and less contrast with the lane markers. Cleans spots were black. Anyone had this happen?

^^^This. It’s not a great feature in my opinion. It does unexpected things with the steering and that can be dangerous. The wheel vibration works very well and is a great feature that accomplishes the same thing without steering for you unexpectedly.

Xeno, not the same thing. Those are a single turn due to an exit ramp etc.

Yes!!! This has been happening to me for the last few weeks in the morning. Only on cold starts, when the car has been parked outdoors. (Winter in Toronto)
It's hard to describe. The steering wheel just twitches left/right (pretty firmly). |

Mine is also doing this! It only does it on cold starts after its been parked outside on cold days, then stops after a couple minutes of driving. I thought I had a flat tire the first time it happened a couple weeks ago.
All my safety aids are tuned off so I don't think it has anything to do with the lane departure system trying to keep it between the lines. |

Mine did a version of this today. One massive correction as I was taking an on-ramp to a freeway.
Conditions: - happened first thing this morning (maybe 2 miles into drive), it’s coldddddd here. - car was in the garage overnight, so the car and tires were not cold. - steering intervention is and has been ‘off’ since I picked up the car (hated it on the test drive). - first time ever experiencing this, almost caused me to wreck. - drove another 25 miles...several lane changes (with and without turn signals to test and try to replicate). Couldn’t replicate it. |

I'm starting to wonder if there's a flaw in the Driver Assistance System. I hope to speak with the Regional Field Engineer this week.
Between the failures some of us have been getting, and this, they all share the same common component - the KAFAS camera. Mine is in the shop for almost the past 2 weeks waiting on the KAFAS camera, and I know of a couple others. I had noticed once that the steering intervention almost ripped the wheel out of my hand once for almost nothing, and then I got the "reduced driver assistance" popup. I wonder if there is a defect / flaw in the camera or software that's throwing off the system, either by detecting items / lines not in the road and freaking out the active lane keeping system, or flat out safing the system as I believe it's doing in my case. |

Oddly enough, mine has never had this issue until today. I am wondering if it is due to the salt on the roads here? They are almost white... maybe throwing off the camera? Not an engineer, but mine only started doing this after the first snow/salting this year.

We’ve begun noticing the twitch as well the past few weeks. The two-lane roads near home lately are partially covered with snow, ice or dried salt. Lane-keeping assistance completely turned off, and departure warning set at lowest vibration level. When roads are clear, steering is normal. Twitch occurs at low and high speeds both.
Our X5 has been parked outside since we got it (garage under renovation), and it’s been cold for most of the time we’ve had it. The only correlation I can draw is that the twitch appeared since we received the latest software update 2-3 weeks ago. |

Any idea how to disable this steering assist and instead just replace it by a vibration alert? It always comes ON when I use adaptive cruise and disable it. Steering assist stays ON even after I disable the adaptive cruise.

Twitch occurs regardless of whether our X5 is clean or covered in salt film. I’ve disabled lane departure warning completely, to see if that eliminates the twitch. (FWIW, we don’t have adaptive cruise or optional driving assist plus.)

I haven't experienced this problem. I am only thinking if my wife has this experience in her new 50i she will never drive it again and I will be at the Mercedes dealership buying her a new car. She's already freaked out about the buggy software and inconsistent behavior of several of the systems.

I'm trying to see if there's a pattern to it, for instance if the car is cold and I put it in drive quickly. Great vehicle if not for these and a couple other issues. Will take it to dealer only if I can be sure to replicate once I'm there |

I am totally sold that this is temperature related somehow. When I leave my heated parkade in the mornings, the car is fine regardless of how cold it is outside. This G05 obviously HATES being left out in the cold for any extended period of time... I guess BMW didn't bother testing them in any sub zero weather Looks like I'm prob gonna have to be the first in this thread to book it in cuz this has turned from annoying to downright unsafe |
