I've got a G05 with 275/45/R20 tires. I know I signed a tire chain disclosure that the G05 as equipped cannot be operated with tire chains.

Has anybody come up with a cable chain that actually works with a G05 with my tire size.


I've searched like crazy and cannot find anything.

I appreciate your responses. I too found those chains by doing an internet search.

Let me be more specific:

When I bought the G05, I was told I could not put tire chains on it and I had to sign a disclosure agreeing that I know the vehicle is not set up for tire chains. (I've attached this disclosure).

I know there are many tire chains that fit the 275/45/20 tire, but I'm reluctant to try them because of this disclosure and the BMW Manual.

With that background, I have a two-part questions:

1) Have you tried regular tire chains on your G05 with success? (proper clearance, no banging, no damage to rims) or,

2) 1) Have you tried cable chains on your G05 with success? (proper clearance, no banging, no damage to rims)

A bit more background: Here is language from the BMW Manual on chains.


Fine-link snow chains
The manufacturer of your vehicle recommends use of fine-link snow chains. Certain types of fine-link snow chains have been tested by the manufacturer of the vehicle and recommended as road-safe and suitable.
Information regarding suitable snow chains is available from a dealer’s service center or another qualified service center or repair shop.
Use
Use only in pairs on the rear wheels, equipped with the tires of the following size:
255/55 R18.
265/50 R19.
275/45 R20.
Follow the snow chain manufacturer's instructions.
Do not reset the Tire Pressure Monitor TPM after mounting snow chains, as doing so may result in incorrect readings.
When driving with snow chains, briefly activate Dynamic Traction Control DTC to optimize the forward momentum.
Maximum speed with snow chains
Do not exceed a speed of 30 mph/50 km/h when using snow chains.

Thanks for the reply. I've got all seasons on the G05. Summer tires and cold weather are a non-start, regardless of chains. The rubber becomes useless in freezing conditions.

I plan to buy cable chains that fit my 275/45/20 all season tires. According to the BMW manual, I should be only putting these "fine link snow chains" on the rear, even though the G05 is AWD.

I do not plan to ever have to actually put these on the car. I am a fair weather skier avoid going to the condo when there is a storm. It is mostly to get past the CHP checkpoint when they require you to carry chains.

just curious, are you driving on 100% pure ice, as in a frozen lake? Not sure why you would need tire chains for just driving in snow unless you only have rear wheel drive or summer tires?

Can't you buy real winter tires? For example https://www.nokiantyres.com/winter-t...liitta-r3-suv/ (I have those, in size 275/45R20 and they seem to work well on snow and are acceptable on ice as well - and not bad on dry asphalt.)

OP lives in the Bay Area like I do. If you go to Tahoe then you are required to have a set of chains in the car regardless of 4x4, snow tires, etc. There are 3 levels of chain controls and R2 is common on I-80. R3 is rare for interstates but can happen on local highways/roads.

Chains are required under the following conditions:

Requirement 1 (R-1): Chains are required on all vehicles except passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks under 6,000 pounds gross weight and equipped with snow tires on at least two drive wheels. Chains must be carried by vehicles using snow tires. All vehicles towing trailers must have chains on one drive axle. Trailers with brakes must have chains on at least one axle.

Requirement 2 (R2): Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four-wheel/all-wheel drive vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels.
NOTE: (Four-wheel/all-wheel drive vehicles must carry traction devices in chain control areas.)

Requirement 3 (R3): Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles, no exceptions.

Thanks for spelling it out. People from outside California have no idea what we deal with. I have been skiing for many years and I understand why CHP has such tough requirements. There are a lot of people who go up to the snow unprepared and get into trouble. CHP has never made me put chains on when I was in an AWD vehicle with at least all-season tires with M+S designation. But, if I didn't have chains in the car, they would have turned me around.

I never expect to have to put them on. In California, the CHP requires vehicles to carry chains. If you get to a checkpoint and don't have chains, they will turn you around. For 90 bucks, I can avoid this situation.

If I lived where it snows I would definitely invest in winter tires. That's not my situation. I live in the Bay Area in California and drive to Tahoe to ski. Being retired, I can choose when I go and avoid traveling when there is a storm. In all the years I've been skiing, AWD with all seasons and sensible driving on my part has been fine.

Interesting design since the chains don't go on the inside of the tire at all. The $400 price is a non-start.

LOL - I remember when I moved from Colorado to Reno in the early 90's. We needed to 'go over the hill' for something and I was watching the signs for chains required. I had them, but I remember saying "what are they going to do? Set up a checkpoint in the middle of the road.... ". We drove around the curve and sure enough - there was a checkpoint in the middle of I-80.
One other time we got past Truckee just before chains were required and I80 was closed. They closed the road behind us and I remember how peaceful and quiet the drive was with no other cars on the road and the snow coming down.

Keep the suggestions coming as I need to get chains for an incoming X5 (Colorado is getting as anal with chains as California now and am starting to look for options).

LOL That's what I do too. I really only carry it to show CHP. But, that's a last resort. If it's already R1 (carry chains, but not have them on), I'm not leaving. It's really only if I'm already on my way and it turns into R1 conditions. Definitely a fair weather skiier.
