Heads UP Display

For anyone who had/has an F15 and now a G05.......

Do you notice that the Heads Up Display is completely useless in the G05 if you are wearing polarized lenses yet that was not the case in the F15?

Anyone find a "fix" to this within the settings or know what the issue is between the two cars?

Thanks in advance.....

I can see it with my polarized lenses. it is just not as bright. I did just get another pair of RX lenses in a separate pair of Prada sunglasses just so I didnt have it so dim. There were a lot of other issues with traveling with polarized glasses like most gas pumps displays disappear. I usually take a few different pairs when traveling. You can always slightly tilt your head and the display will get a lot brighter. It works if you really have to concentrate on directions in the heads up display.

Polarizing, whether a lens in a camera or a pair of glasses, is designed to cut down on reflections; given how the HUD on basically every car I know works (reflecting off the windshield), polarized sunglasses will by nature cut down on the visibility. The extent of how much it disappears depends on angles (just test this by angling your sunglasses in the car next time), but I have a pair of sunglasses that aren't polarized in my door pocket too.

First world, but annoying.

Didn't work in my F15 or my Audi Q7 with polarized lenses - or at least visibility was severely limited. So much so that I specifically used/use non-polarized sunglasses.

I've had at least 5 different bmws in the last 7 years with HUD and every single one has been the same. You can still see it with polarized glasses; just not as bright

I didn’t order HUD because I always wear polarized glasses. I kind of wish I had ordered it, just for resale, but I won’t wear anything but polarized sunglasses.

As people have said, polarized lenses either don't work with the HUD or severely cut down on the brightness of its display. I knew this going in but love my polarized lenses. Spoke to a guy at a sunglass shop and picked up a pair of Revos that were specifically made for this type of thing - aviator version or some such. It seems to dim the display when looking through a little bit, but not too bad. It's most noticeable when it is really bright and sunny, but for average sunlight it seems to work well.

I was told the rotate option in the HUD settings was supposed to help with polarized glasses. I don't wear polarized glasses so can't confirm if it actually helps.

No, the rotation is just to rotate the image on the screen display.
It has not effect on polarized glass.

Why would you want to rotate the HUD's image? Anyone have any examples of what this would look like on the windshield when its rotated?

It tilts the HUD clockwise or counter clockwise so that you can align the image with the horizon.

So if you are on a circular track, doing 130mph and therefore your head is tilted, the HUD will tilt too? Ok, seriously, isn't the default position horizontal. I get the up/down and sideways positioning but the rotation just seems strange to me. I don't have it, so I can't play with it.

It's a pretty fine adjustment to the angle. I think it is there because there are factors that can get it out of wack, for example, a windshield replacement. Putting it into xDrive just makes it easier to fix things when it does get tilted.

Rotating the HUD will help visibility with the polarized sunglasses. When two polarized lenses are aligned perpendicular to one another you cannot see through them, as you rotate them, you gain more visibility. This is the science on how the lenses cut down on glare. The same works for the reflection of the HUD - instead of tilting your head (getting away from that 90 degree angle) you rotate the HUD as much as you can tolerate so you can see it with your polarized sun glasses w/o having to tilt your head.

I'd test that rotating the HUD image made any difference. If it's just the image itself that is being rotated then it won't make a difference. You would have to rotate the image display to change the brightness through polarized sunglasses.

My guess is it's just the image itself that is being rotated so it wouldn't make any difference, but it would be worth a try to find out for sure. I don't have any polarized sunglasses to try it out though... I stopped using them a while ago because displays in cars and phones are polarized enough to make them look dim through polarized material.

I turned up the brightness to almost 100% and raised the height/level. Fixed the issue for me.

HOW DOES BMW HEAD-UP DISPLAY WORK?

The BMW Head-Up Display system uses a small projector and a system of mirrors that beam high-contrast images onto a translucent film on the windscreen. Images are projected directly into the driver’s line of sight, and appear about two meters away, making them easy to read and process. BMW Head-Up Display has adjustable height for optimal viewing, and produces full-color images in many newer BMW models. Drivers can control their BMW Head-Up Display output through the iDrive Controller.

General info article/video but doesn't speak to polarization or rotation.. ..

Rotating the screen won’t help much. Rotating your head to one side or another will open up a partial view of the HUD when wearing polarising glasses. I decided HUD > glasses and got a new non-polarising pair for the car. They can also cause an issue with the idrive screen and dash...

When you rotate polarized lens or camera filters, you change the polarization orientation. You cannot do that by rotating the image displayed on the HUD color screen! The polarization orientation of the HUD image is determined by the windshield reflection, and you cannot change that.

Had HUD on my last 4 cars with the rotation feature, and no, it won't help visibility with polarized lenses. It might help by causing you to rotate your head, but the primary purpose of the rotation is to correct the - perceived - horizontal aspect of the display for those of us with OCD. Only a very minor correction might be needed, but at least it enables you to correct whatever tilt might be present on the display to where you think it should be.
