The previous years are not jerky at all. I have had to tell every passenger I had that the engine was shutting down when I stop. No one noticed that it was doing it. I have never felt it either.

Edit: I should note I'm referring to normal driving and not to some situations like pulling into a garage as some have described. When I first got mine and was getting used to parking it in my garage I had it shut off a few times. Now that I'm used to it I can park without it shutting off by naturally, actually learnt I guess, feathering the brakes.

Did you mean 2021? Or do you have a 2020 model with the button removed?

His profile mentions 2021. I think it was a typo.

Do you think it is less noticeable when the engine starts/stops with the mild hybrid?

Very smooth in my 2021. Car actually shuts off around 8mph and coasts on battery power. Sometimes doesn't even try to start after you lift off the brake until after you hit the accelerator.

I feel like if enough people wanted ASS disabled, BMW could add it as an option in idrive settings but it sounds like it’s very smooth for 2021.

It's my understanding that BMW modified the engine mounts, and that dampens most vibrations from starting the engine. On my 45e, other than noise, you do not feel any indication that the engine has started, but that is also getting the vehicle started to move via the electric motor, so not sure when you only have an ICE. The mild hybrids should be similar to the 45e in getting started off the line, though. I haven't driven one.

I cannot compare the 2021 mild hybrid performance to the older models. I can compare it to the Sport Mode. It is not noticeable to me. The start when in the comfort mode is instantaneous and smooth. Very quick. I was very pleasantly surprised after reading some earlier comments.

Just picked up 40i, no auto start stop button.
The suggestion was to adjust sport personal to turn into comfort via iDrive.

Do you notice it a lot when it stops and re-starts?

I have a MY20 40i with the ASS button, but it's actually the least intrusive of any car I've driven, including a recent Q7, so I never turn it off except in the automatic turn-off in Sport. I don't think I'd miss it if there wasn't a button.

Have a X545e. I have driven several 2020mX5 40i loaners in the last couple of weeks. Auto, start, stop not bad but noticeable. Was at the dealership today a drove a 2021 X5 40i, and it was significantly smoother, not quick as smooth as the 45e but pretty close.

I picked up mine today. The auto start/stop does not seem to be as jerky or noticeable as other vehicles I have driven, I don't have another X5 to compare it to, but it is noticeable - but not irritatingly so. However, it does lower the fan speed on the A/C so while you don't really feel or hear the engine turning on or off - I hear it because the A/C fan changes speeds.

The wife just picked up a loner from the dealer since our X6M is in the shop. On the 6 if you put it in manual shift position it automatically turns off the Auto stop function without having to go into sport mode. You don't have to manually shift your unless you touch the paddles. Going to try tgis when i head out after while.

Not really, it's much better system than before, and I haven't had any opportunity when I felt the need to turn it off.

As I have said before I find the ASS much better on the mild hybrid than my previous MB E450 but there are still times when I don’t want it to operate (stop/start traffic)

I have the Sport Individual programmed to all Comfort settings and tap the Sport button when I want to eliminate the ASS

it’s a one button press exactly the same as turning off the ASS.

I find start/stop doesn't activate half the time. Are there a list of requirements that need to be met for it to become active? ie, engine up to temp, certain battery voltage, etc??

I notice mine used to work all the time but more recently it doesn't.......wondering if its an indication of my battery needing a top up?

yes, there's a whole host of requirements that have to be met for the computer to let the vehicle use ASS. its listed in the manual somewhere, i'm sure someone will post that.

but sometimes you can 'force' it to go into ASS by depressing the brake pedal all the way to the floor while the car has been stopped. It'll either stop the engine or continue showing the prompt that ASS isn't available in the dash.

I tried this, it does not work. The workaround I used as mentioned on one of the posts, was to change the default driving mode from Comfort to Sport Individual then set Sport Individual characteristics from Sport to Comfort.

Hopefully Sport Individual Driving Mode (all characteristics set to Comfort) equals Comfort Driving Mode. BMW will definitely hear from me when it comes to forcing the use of this feature.

That is what other people have reported but today in the G20 forum a person said the used Bimmercode to turn of the ASS in Comfort mode. I said so far everyone said that was not possible and asked for the details, he hasn't posted anything.

I also emailed BimmerCode support for suggestions. I'll post their reply once I get it. Ideally we'd have an option to persistently disable Auto Start Stop like in some older models. Fingers crossed.
