Deposit on order
Is deposit on the order new norm?
Did you pay a deposit while ordering? how much? I never did deposit the last 6 years. In CA, I know dealers can't ask for a deposit. |

I actually put one down. It was $1000. It was mostly to get one sooner, as the dealer I went to didn't have any in the pipeline. They apparently "traded" with another dealer to get one and it is supposed to be ready in a couple weeks which would be 6 weeks from when I put the deposit down. This is also my first time buying a new BMW, so I'm sure I'm getting taken advantage of haha.

They are pretty common depending on where you live. Dealers set the amount and will generally apply it towards your drive off price.
I would just make sure it's refundable if you choose to not purchase. Dealer we order my wife car from in August required 1k but was refundable. Other dealer in ATL wanted 2K but said it was not refundable. It also will sometime depend on the specs of the car you order. If you order what the dealer consider to be a "unicorn" they will also require a deposit and make it non-refundable due to them having hard time selling if you don't complete the purchase. If you order a pretty standard spec car, they are more than willing to work with you since they can sell it if you choose to not purchase. |

I had to do a $2,500 when they ordered mine. I think it depends on the area, dealer and prior relationship with the dealer.

Depends on your relationship with the dealer. On my first BMW, I had to put down a deposit. Haven't had to do it since then, and this is my 5th BMW from this dealer (2 M3s, 2 X5s, 1 X3)...

A follow-up question is whether going through the credit check and putting a deposit down locks in the lease offered by the dealer (eg. monthly payment, money down, money factor, etc.); or if it is all TBD and subject to the finance office once the car is finally built and on the lot?

Agree. Depends on the area/dealer. I've ordered 2 BMW's from my local dealer. Both very customized to what I wanted and both PCD. In both cases, I didn't provide a deposit.

The amount of deposit has been all over the place for me over the years. It has varied from $500-2000, always refundable.
I have not been loyal to any one center. While I've loved dealing with some of my sales reps over the years, they are bound by what the center ownership decides is doable. I got my two last cars at a center where the first deal was excellent, and the rep was able to get an excellent price, but second go around, it wasn't nearly as good. After ordering my newest car, the deal was abysmal at those two centers and I had to go elsewhere. |

Put down $1k when I ordered mine in 2019 here in CA. When it came in some weeks later I went in to do the deal and they handed me my check back. It had never been deposited.

They asked me for $1500, eventually agreed to $1k.
