2nd that. This “screen dominated dashboard” trend is hideous. I specifically went with an X7 over a Merc GLS b/c of the screen real estate on the Mercedes dash. I think the current blend of screens and physical buttons BMW currently has (along with the scroll wheel) is a nice balance.

I don't think they'll redesign the entire dash mid production cycle. The screens are probably to work out bugs with ID8 hardware.

I do agree that if you want to keep your car for 20 years, it's unclear whether the current crop of touch-screen enabled cars will still fully work, but in the foreseeable future, the hardware should be good enough by now I think, |

Edit: This is an excerpt from a letter written by Tesla to NHTSA. The full letter is on the nhtsa gov site. "While the wear rate is heavily influenced by the active use of the center display system, even more so when the vehicle is in drive or charging, given a reasonable average daily use of 1.4 cycles, the expected life would be 5-6 years. NHTSA has not presented any evidence to suggest that this expected life is outside industry norms or that the eMMC flash memory device itself does not comport with that average lifetime estimate. Instead, NHTSA has asserted that the component should last at least the useful life of the vehicle, essentially double its expected lifespan. Tesla has significant concerns with the impact of this tentative conclusion." I don't think BMW or any other car manufacturer would have a different expected life for display systems. It's also interesting that we expect the total life of a car to be 10-12 years, according to the Tesla statement above. Yet the average age of cars in the U.S. is 11.9 years old and a quarter of the cars on the road are 16+ years old. Cars are becoming more disposable or what? It seems like Tesla wants their vehicles in the junk yards not for resale. Putting in non automotive parts like electronics that needs replaced every 5-6years doesn't sounds like a long term solution for the environment but rather increasing the massive amount of electronic trash that does not bio degrade.
Don't know about many of you but if I'm looking for a used car I am looking for something I can actually use for a good value not something I have to rebuild to use.... I don't think the Tesla model is going to work well long term.

Honestly people on here loosing their shit over a test mule which is clearly botched together for development purposes. Probably will get the new i drive system but it doesn't mean a whole dash redesign, just easier to transplant from one to another - i mean its clear its just bolted onto the dash.

Super cool to see big large screens 🖥 for better navigation and ease-of-use.
But I wish there was a way to integrate the screens cleanly into the dashboard console so they look part of the cockpit and are not just sharply jetting out at you. |

I absolutely hated the E9X and E6x camel inspired dashboard with the two humps. I have no idea why BMW decided to go with that instead of just boxing it out into one streamlined piece.
HAHAHA~! Remember when Porsche had a trajillion buttons? One button for every possible feature or function; ridiculous. Star Trek inspired steering wheel:

Oh,...but WAIT BMW. If you remove the gearshift knob imagine all the $$ you'll be losing out on because of the gearshift Swarovski crystal option!!

Don't worry, they still have the crystal iDrive dial (now totally transparent), and the crystal gear toggle and seat control

I remember mentioning that the crystal gearshift knob is designed by Swarovski months ago in this forum, and people did not believe me then.
