EV miles estimates on display?

2023 eDrive X5

Noticed since last software update (just a correlation) that when I charge home on my L2 Chargepoint a few times it seems the dashboard reading shows ~45 miles whereas in the past it was always ~31.

It may be related to having 0 miles left and fully charging perhaps... as I think that it happened a few times when I was pretty much empty rather than a charge with it still showed ~10-20 miles left.

Do not know if I will get the full ~45 miles but was curious if other saw this...and if related to anything or just random

That is common since history is usually wiped when an update is down. It is also getting warmer so that will increase the range. You should see things normalize as you use it.

Don’t read too much into that estimated range. I have had it shown 50 a couple of times. We all know 45e won’t do that.

I thought so.. but even last summer it never showed past 32
Just hoping maybe the software was able to tease out a few more

that’s what many thought after their software updates, but nope. as mentioned, your driving history was reset in the process, so the vehicle thinks you’ve been very efficient thus reflects a high electric range. it will plateau after a few drives

Mission Tuning does offer to code EU-spec extended range for U.S.-spec 45e, if interested

Ah its just been odd as most times (since the update) it still only showed ~32 miles but a few times ~45. I think the latter was when I charged from near 0 but cannot be sure..

Anyway still a good deal as most of my driving is under 30.

This bares rementioning…the history is based on the last approximately 18-miles of your driving, and expects all of your future driving to be exactly the same:
- same speeds
- same stop and go
- same up and down (as in climbing a hill or coming down)
- same weather conditions

It’s no different from the estimated range to empty on your ICE…After coming home form a long road trip at interstates speeds with the cruise set, I’ve seen it say huge number (achieved while on that trip), but after refilling, and returning to more normal commuting, after a short while, it could drop 100-miles or more in the range to empty almost immediately. It’s constantly readjusting based on what you do. I’ve seen it drop nearly 10-miles or so from being parked in my warm garage, backing it out into a cold winter day, and the next morning, show significantly less available range…it certainly wasn’t 10-miles to back out of the garage! The temperature dropped, significantly. SO, my guess is that it also takes into account the current temperature with that estimate, and it’s not only the last 18-miles of use.

After a while, you learn. You might get more, less, or the same range…it all depends on where you last drove, and how you will be driving in your immediate future.
