X5 in for Warranty work OUCH!

Well this might be a long read. I haven't posted but for the past 14 days my 19 X5 50i has been in the shop due to some sort of leak under the front of the car. I was out doing yard work after coming home from the gym 7am and as I walked up the drive way I seen a shimmer effect on the floor of my garage. It was a pool and run of something from under the front center the the engine bay. I touched it and it was cool to the touch and had an off very strange smell. So I started to guess what it could be;
  1. I thought water from AC unit. No way didn't run it that morning at all.
  2. Thought maybe clear power steering fluid but thought its electric.
  3. Thought radiator fluid, no way smell is off and its perfectly clear but still oily feeling.

Either way I knew a trip to the dealer was to happen. I called up and asked if it was okay to drive and they ask what does the car say. Well no alarms or errors at this time. Somewhat small amount came out. Anyway headed in to drop it off. Now I always work with the same service adviser because he always has an X5 waiting for me.

I popped the hood just before leaving and there were spots all over the top, NOW I'm really worried it might of been engine oil but it was super clean. Well drove it anyway, not a far drive but it was a risk.

So I was told dropping it off on Friday they would not get to it until Saturday. Not to big of a deal so was happy to hear. Saturday roles around I get a call. Well we are going to get BMW engineering involved in this because it seems to be the entire secondary cooling system!!!! I was like oh no any idea on how long, he said no ETA right now. Here is where I tip my hat to my dealer. I was kept in the loop via text messages and calls the entire way, over the 14 days they had it I received 18 messages, and that does not account for their reply's to my questions that is him reaching out to me to keep me posted. I never once had to call them for an update.

Monday he calls to let me know the parts have to be ordered from Germany and it could take two weeks but he will engage his parts department manager to push for sooner. Even during the waiting for parts they updated my software (my request now up to date 03.2019.48).

Timeline; Dropped it off May 30th Thursday, got the news of parts coming from Germany Monday June 3rd.

June 12th roles in and parts arrived the X5 will be back to my on the 13th.

I head into the dealer yesterday June 13th to pick her up. I sat down to get the information in better detail from service adviser. According to BMW Engineering the radiator fluid was incorrect (no details on what they mean other than bad fluid mix). This caused a seal or hose to degrade on the secondary coolant system (did not get any information on which seal what seal or location) my guess from the parts is might of been around a clamp or hose. They are sending a sample of the fluid back to BMW for testing. The Engineer said flush everything and put new in.

Here is what they replaced. Keep in mind they do not list the parts like hoses since they come with the parts ordered.
  1. Radiator 171010
  2. Inter cooler 175010
  3. inter cooler 175010, YES both right and left side!
  4. Clamps 889520
  5. New Antifreeze 832540

Update, everything nice and clean no leaks. Repairs looks to have gone well. Software updated added some cool camera features my X5 did not have working before. As I back into the garage it will adjust to show how close I am to the wall when I first pull in. I can now set my home it actually shows up on the map now. All my settings stayed except the home screen, made those adjustments to back to normal for me. Not much time driving yet but will put some miles on it, so far happy with the repair.

Wow, glad they fixed it, and I am so jealous of you having such a great dealer. In general, all I ask for is updates as your dealer does... but with every dealer I've come across, it's like pulling teeth to get info.

I just bought from them few months ago and I wish I would have done it sooner. They have been the best to work with out of all the dealers I have worked with in the past!!! I get it stuff breaks, now lets fix it and root cause it so it don't happen again.

Right, I like the root cause analysis. What did scare me though, if I was a G05 owner, is the wrong fluid from the factory....just have to wonder how many others are like that. How many miles are on yours? Maybe other owners near your mileage can keep an eye on theirs.

Yes from factory, and just about 1400 miles. Apparently the secondary system has different fluid than the engine fluid, just a note. But yes anyone should be concerned IMHO.

How in the he** is the wrong fluid put in at the assembly plant? Someone needs to investigate the plant in SC. Could be an issue with the wrong fluid but unlikely that only one vehicle was involved. Please keep us updated if you get additional info.

If you where to of smelled this you would have been like yeah that is not antifreeze.... Like the dealer told me to early to tell without testing but the Engineer said that it was not correct mix. As I get details if I can, I will share. It would be nice if someone who worked at the factory could give us more insight on this part of the assembly.

This is the way most service calls work. It’s like a good Dr. with great bedside manners keeping the lines of communication open and actively listening to the concerns of the patent. Good report.

You missed out, the M5 comp was out of this world, imo. This year, they let us take it out without a employee/passenger. I drove it pretty hard, but was scared of crashing or getting a ticket. i seen people drive it like it was at a race track! took the M850 convertible for a spin, but they required a passenger, so it wasn't as fun.

back to your topic, anything that might cause issue later down the road? sounds like it did some damage.

The camera angle moves to the side or back or front to show how close you are. Earlier it was something I had to do manually by pressing the camera icon on the screen. This is much better.

According to BMW Engineer he has no concern with any of the metal items internally to the engine components it cools. But said the weaker aluminum radiators were not worth the risk so they got replaced. According to them all the plastic parts and hoses where done as well. They are not broken down by part number because it came with the other parts. Honestly I would of thought a flush and replacement would have been good enough but this must be serious coolant mixtures, which is why it would concern me if I was anyone else. Apparently smelling it is a good start to determine if it is correct or not. Mine was like a bad acid chemical smell. Not sweet like normal coolant. But I'd get it check at first service minimum for sure.

From a preventive standpoint, if someone wanted to check theirs now, how would they do it? Is there more than one coolant reservoir, one for the main engine coolant and a second one for this special secondary circuit? Which would also mean two separate routes through the radiator. Any clue what they did to drain it out?

I thought so too, one thing I am happy for is this happened to me before the heat really comes on here in AZ. I could only imagine if the coolant wasn't correctly cooling what internal damage it could have caused over time say an AZ summer.

Not sure if I'm alone here but when I pull in I let the car run for about 30sec to 1min before shutting down. Then I leave the garage open to allow for venting due to the heat extremes in AZ.

That's pretty close to my mileage :-(, although I am 40i. When was your X5 delivered?

Man, sorry you went through that! It's hard to believe this scenario is even possible given the controls they must have in place in SC. But the good news is that there's a happy ending. And you've got a heck of a story to tell.
