At least based on my calculations - it is cheaper to own. I have always owned a car and sold around 50-55 months with close to 70k miles on them. I feel that's when you can get the maximum return out of your car and still get a new car ever 4-5 years.

I have usually been able to sell the car for 50-55% of the value of what I initially paid - which is close enough to the residual value the dealership quoted me for 3 years and 15K miles a year. If I were to sell the car after 3 years - I can sell it for more than the residual value the dealership quoted me.

The real value in lease is - your car is under warranty and you can get by with keeping the car is decent condition - and don't have to worry about eating in the car and not worry about normal wear and tear and go to regular car wash etc.

Whereas - when you have purchased it - in my case - I like to keep the car in excellent condition and hand wash it.

When it comes to the $7500 rebate - it makes little sense to lease it. Just throwing money down the toilet.

Now - with carvana and Vroom and other services - selling the car is easy peasy too.

BMW is still the #1 leased vehicle. Long term ownership for these cars has too many headaches. Rather enjoy a different car every 3 years. Anything that depreciates in value in my opinion doesn't deserve long term ownership.

This is my 3rd BMW and the first one to purchase. In the past, we get 8k to 9k discount and leasing is cheap. Now 5 years loan's monthly payment is cheaper than a monthly lease. I can sell it before my warranty expires easily. With 7500 tax credits, purchasing is better this year financially.

Not even close to being #1, that belongs to Honda. They aren't even the #1 leased luxury brand, that is MB. Maybe you are referring to BMW being the brand that has the highest percentage of leases versus purchase. is change That may still be true but certainly is changing since incentivizing leasing is no longer the focus of BMW.

We aren't saying you shouldn't lease just that it is something to look at. Leasing is rarely the best financial move to make but that doesn't mean it is a bad move since it is often done for other reasons.

Here’s the IRS form that needs to be filled out. Either tell your tax preparer that they need to claim this on 8936 or use you tax preparation software to find it.
