Decided to back out of 50e order

We ordered a 50e, scheduled for a week 50 build. Like everyone else, got pushed to week 10+.

I contacted my SA to inform him we no longer wish to proceed with the order. In part because of the issues and the delay. My wife has been waiting for a new car for two years. She opted to look at other options instead of waiting and risking problems. Additionally, I ordered a F90 M5C from this dealership a few years back.

In short, my SA told me that this was “unfair” to him. What? Am I crazy for being shocked at that response? What kind of sales tactic is this? I guess I’m just taken aback and wondering if I’m in the wrong here.

No way are you wrong! You purchased the vehicle with the understanding you would get what you wanted in X amount of weeks. The factory changed all that and now the circumstances don’t allow you to wait. You just caught a glimpse of the real person you were dealing with that’s all.

What Duker22 said. You haven't done anything wrong. This SA was trying to guilt you into keeping the order, forgetting that success in sales is long term relationships. I've bought 4 BMWs from my SA. He plays the long game.

Your SA is crazy. He is not delivering the car to you as promised. If he thinks something is "unfair" he should take that up with BMW - they are the one at fault - NOT you.

F that SA. You're not in the wrong at all. It's your decision and they should have tried to get you into a 40i or M60.

I can't stand these sales people. We're supposed to feel bad for them and pay several thousand dollars for something we don't want to make them feel good?

It's a BS sales tactic. I would have led him down that "unfair" road so slowly until he fell apart.

Everything you did was within your rights. Tell him to take it up with BMW.

Thanks yall. He did try to talk me into a 40i, but my wife wants a PHEV or EV SUV, hates the look of the iX. I woulda stayed with bmw otherwise. After I said that the unfair card came out.

No unfair here, your money, you don't want to buy. And you haven't taken delivery. Sounds very fair to me.

"Fair" is a kids word that simply means "what I want". Anytime you hear it, substitute that phrase for the word and you'll understand the real point of the message.

I 100% agree that OP should not feel any guilt or feel pressured by the dealership under these circumstances.

This situation raised a question in my mind for those of you who know how the dealerships are incented/motivated. Once the dealer went ahead and committed an allocation to a customer order and that order is canceled, what happens to the allocation? Would they switch it to a dealer stock order (assuming they don't have a queue of customers waiting for an allocation to fulfill an order)?

I bet they don't do anything at all, and just don't call when it comes in unless it's some kind of weirdo options and colors. It will gets produced, they get it at the dealer and sell it as dealer stock (probably at a higher price than he ordered it for).

If it hasn't been built yet, they can just give the allocation to someone else and spec out as they like. You haven't cost them anything except a sale, which you don't owe them because they don't have the product in the time promised.

Yes, my understanding is that it switches to a Priority 3 order and the dealer can configure it as they want as long as it hasn't reach 150 yet.

Interesting, and what if it is canceled once it has already been produced?

The dealer will have to pay for it and find another client, which may take some time.

Is this not a negotiation leverage for the buyer if the car is specifically or heavily configured?

When I was shopping in 2022, dealer had a couple of such vehicles on the lot that were refused by the clients for various reasons. I was offered better discount on those compared to my factory order. Market dynamics have somewhat changed since then. Though, I would still expect a better discount on a vehicle that's already on the lot.

Depending on the dealer, state law, agreement, etc. then the dealer usually will keep any deposit and it goes into dealer stock.

I'm not following what you mean in regards to leverage for negations, that would depend on the dealer and situation but some dealers do add a lot of options for their stock.

Did you have to put down a deposit on the order, and if so, are they withholding it?

They are giving me the deposit back since the car was delayed so long. I went from 112 back to 111 two weeks after its build date. That’s when I found out it wouldn’t be built until late March, if that.

However, I had my doubts until my SA called me after talking to his manager. Tone was totally different. I think he got upset I was backing out and the manager told him to pull it together. Just speculating though. Really made me mad playing the guilt card.

They also acknowledged the issues with the 50e and said they understand my concerns. They even went so far as to claim the production delay was to sort out the problems with the 50e. Haven’t heard that from any of the stuff on here however. My dealer is pretty small compared to most, so who knows.
