Fuel Filter Replacement Service
It just came to my attention that the fuel filter is one of the parts needed to be serviced regularly. Haven't be able to find any useful DIY information online. Does anyone have ideas on this? Where is it and how it should be replaced? Any DIY tips? Thanks!

Unlike the BMWs of old (say, mid-2000 and earlier) where you had a fuel filter that was located under the car below the driver's or passenger's seat, I believe all the newer BMWs have a filter that is embedded in the gas tank and is an integrated part of the fuel pump. As such, it is no longer is a serviceable item.
That's what my research found on my '16 X3 and my daughter's '20 X1. I have no reason to suspect the G05 is any different, although I'd be happy to learn that I'm wrong because I always replaced my fuel filters every 60K miles when they were serviceable. Cheap insurance to protect the fuel system! |

What did you see that told you the fuel filter needs to be serviced regularly? It is not listed as an item in the maintenance guide.

Exactly what I want to ask as well. Why do you think you need it? Oem fuel filter quality is pretty good. Gas tank os plastic these days, should be little or no rust in fuel. If filter is not flowing well, you will know it. G05 seems to be too new to need this. Well unless you have a very high mileage one.

I just think it's a filter and it gets clogged up over time isn't? I also saw on other brands owner's manuals saying it should be serviced regularly. So the same should be applied to all cars? I'm not sure about BMW's regulations but I think it's the same.

No, just ignore that. The maintenance requirements are different for different brands. There is no service needed on the fuel filter.

Saw recently on here as a preventative service to replace the fuel filter. Is this not necessary? TurtleBoy

I recently investigated the fuel filter service for my G550, and found that it's mounted with the fuel pump inside the fuel tank. Replacement requires removal of the fuel tank, e.g., major surgery! Why would a filter requiring periodic maintenance be made so inaccessible?
I dug a bit deeper into the topic, and discovered that fuel dispensing pumps (gasoline filling stations) have filtration systems built into them. All grades and blends of gasoline are filtered to 10 microns, which is about the same as an automobile's fuel filter. Gasoline filtration is regulated by every state, and most are based on a NIST standard. So as long as you don't introduce contaminants into your fuel tank with dirt around the filler orifice, or add fuel from a dirty gas can, the car's filter should last a very long time. More info on this topic can be found at petroclear.com. |

Are we sure for G05, change the lower pressure fuel pump needs tank to come off? In older BMW, it is accessible from popping out the 2nd row seat cushion. It is a rather simple job.

Yea, it was just copy and paste. Saw it after reading the response that it wasn't necessary so just wanted to confirm that the dealer was incorrect.
