Even in EV mode, if you press the pedal down all the way, it will force the ICE on. In hybrid mode, it comes on much sooner. Unless you're really pushing it, you may not notice it except for the additional power.

That is definitely a possibility. The car runs a 12.5 @110 as is, which is pretty impressive. Another 70 horsepower would push it to 12 flat or faster. The 50e is also designed to be beaten on when it’s cold (not fully warmed up). I wonder if that’s another factor.

We’ve heard about some changes to the B58s in the PHEVs to presumably retain reliability when aggressively starting from cold, but not sure I’d agree with the way you state it here.

If the engine is different other than tuning, bmw would have given it a different code name. So far all the claim about engine internals are different is imagination

Correct, there are no differences in the engine between the 40i and 45e/50e. The only differences are some bolt ons.

I have E70 35d which I bought new in 2011. Your F15 35d is a single turbo vs bi-turbo in E70. I love diesels, never owned a pure gas engine (I am European). My first car was 2001 530d touring, great car.
However, my wife's 50e is better. Around the town you don't need ICE at all. Torque is from the first second. It is fast in full EV mode. On highway, ICE is smoother than 35d. I am towing 7,500 lbs travel trailer with my 35d, which has done a great job in the last 50k towing miles. Once we are past 1,000 miles on ICE in our 50e, I will need to test towing with 50e. Quote:

50e owners... what did the Dealer tell you upon puck up of your new cars re 'wearing in' the ICE? As it is a majority in EV around town... surely the ICE B58 needs to be knocked in for say 2000kms (around 1200 miles) when new?

have you looked in the manual? It used to be 1000-miles/1600Km keep the rpm below 4K and max speed 100mph/160km/h. Note there is a breakin for the tires and brakes, too listed in there. Some have resorted to running it in sport mode to keep the engine on, but BMW doesn't specify the miles are EV or ICE.

Often best to ignore what the dealer tells you. BMW says the break-in period is 1,200 miles/2000kms and recommends running those in Hybrid. That doesn't guarantee the ICE will run much but that is what I would do.

How I came to this conclusion? I just filled up my 45e, from 16% to 100%, took 15 gallons. According to trip computer, I should have only used 9 gallons since last fuel up. I spent like a hour to track down every details in trip computers. Then I found out my last fuel up on Jan 15th, I filled the tank to ~70% only, for an unknown reason. And then it all made sense, 70% -> 16% is about 9.7 gallon. Then 16%-> 100% is 15 gallon. After correcting for this, all the number make sense. I will share the rest of summary later.

Besides the fact that I don't see a need for it given how quick the 50e is, I don't know how a tune will affect the assistance from the electric motor. It may be fine but why worry about it for such little gain.

I'm thinking I will simply jeep it in sport/ICE mode for first 2000kms as it doesn't make sense in Hybrid as the ICE needs tgat necessarily break in kms...
