I'm in touch with a guy in Washington who had a drivetrain issue and sent it in for service. they had it for 2 weeks and didn't comment about any modded battery capacity, so I think it's safe to say they didn't 'see' it

On the other hand, the car sends all kinds of data to BMW (charged energy, used energy etc.), so BMW knows. Of course, I have no idea what kind of logs they keep, but for product development reasons, they may keep all the data and analyze it to learn more about the batteries and their performance under different conditions.

By some privacy laws, you can stop your car sending the info or have BMW delete the info they store.

BMW has the ability to change how much of the battery you can use, and just might do it on older vehicles, if they get out of warranty. No idea if they ever would, but they could.

Great info in this thread - as a 45e future owner (has entered production) and ex-Tesla owner, I have concerns over the onboard charger and rate.

Does anyone know if you can replace the onboard charger at all? I would do that before paying for the flash, but honestly, the flash to EU standards looks pretty attractive.

nobody's done it. if there were aftermarket or DIY solutions already, many would've. yes, it's sloooooow compared to what it should be

It depends on what your typical use case is. The battery size is sufficient for the average daily use on EV. With a level 2 EVSE, you should easily be able to recharge fully overnight even if you need to make use of off-peak charging to save some money.

A faster charging system is likely to require more cooling, so simply swapping in a new box with a higher capacity probably isn't going to work without additional hardware changes, making it not as simple as you might think. While maybe not a big deal, without software changes, the estimate on when the charge will be finished wouldn't be correct, either.

Faster charging is critical on an EV, but desirable on a PHEV, but at what cost? The X5 45e is already heavy, and there really isn't much open space to put additional or larger hardware.

Anyone else do this flash and have any feedback so far.?

With gas prices rising this is so tempting but feel like car is too new to flash right now. Currently just passed the 1600 mile mark after two months and 1200 of that was pure electric, if I had the extra capacity I might have been closer to 1400 miles on electric.

personally, I wouldn't unlock the full 24kWh battery. lithium ion batteries do not like sitting at full charge for an extended period of time. they especially don't like to be discharged completely where the risk of a thermal event is likely if sitting discharged for an extended time. The included software does not allow setting a variable maximum charge level...it's fixed.

not in the vehicle or MyBMW app. i have a JuiceBox EVSE and can set the end charge level (limit) in its companion app.

it doesn't really know, so it takes some input from the user. here's where I can adjust it.

note the two arrows. i can slide the first arrow telling it how much I'm starting with when I plug it in (in percent, miles, or kWh), then adjust the second arrow telling it when to stop. another detail needed is to tell the JuiceBox the total battery capacity (kWh) so it has an end point.

it's not precise but works

One thing to keep in mind is that the battery charge percentage does not represent the actual physical battery capacity...the computer adjusts it to represent what you are allowed to use, so 100% is the amount of USEABLE capacity, not necessarily the physical maximum. The same thing about zero...the computer keeps a lower end buffer, so zero does not represent a real depleted battery.

Given the rising gas prices. I took the plunge and purchased the Mission tuning upgrade. Too multiple tries to get my battery unlocked. My range went from mid 30s to low 40s so far, takes time to recalibrate. I selected the Euro battery limit rather than full battery range.

Not sure I would want to risk (or am brave enough to be) messing with the warranty over a few miles of added EV range. Good Luck

Everyone's use case differs...I haven't bought gas since last August after a long road-trip, so what I have in EV range is more than enough!
