"Dual" exhaust question

I've owned my 45e for most of a year now and don't believe I've ever seen any exhaust coming from the right tailpipe, while the left blows like a chimney when the ICE is being revved.

BMW seems to like complicated valved exhaust systems, but am I missing something else here? Are there certain conditions that have to be met for the right side to be open?

Not sure about 45e but on the 40i the right exhaust opens when the car is in sports mode. I would expect the same for 45e.

Are you sure your right exhaust valve opens right when you change it to sport mode? Start your car and change between the modes, does the valve open/close? I was under the impression that it only opens up at 4k rpm.

Even for the M50i, the right valve doesn't open immediately upon selecting sport mode. It only opens up when my engine reaches 4k rpm. With that said, I have Bimmerlink and opened the valve permanently (removing fuse 203).

You are right. It opens up at cold start and also in sport mode with revs at 4k. In sport mode the exhaust sound changes slightly so I had mistakenly assumed the right valve opened up right away.

In stock trim, the right valve stays close until you hit a certain boost level.
There are a few ways to program it to open.
Bimmercode + removing fuse or unplugging the valve and taping it up.
Via MHD / BM3 to code the valve to stay open in sports mode regardless of engine revs / boost levels.

I’m not that familiar with the “e” BMWs and how the “e” system works with the ICE system…but see the info below on how the exhaust flap functions on ICE BMWs:

Thanks everyone, I figured it was BMW making things overcomplicated as per usual.
