In VA we are required to have front and rear plates. I’m planning on going with Carbon fiber M bracket for rear and BMW CCA bracket for the front. Sound good?

I have arctic gray, Msport 40i with Tartufo Marino. Picked it up on Tuesday and Love it!
I ordered these spanner screws. I would think they are in a but less circulation than the torx eBay ones.

Did you get the Navy color to compliment the Phytonic blue?

I use security screws but on other BMW's the size was M6. Is the G05 an M5 screw for the plate?

No frames here. Just the plate.

I saw somewhere that they were M5. I guess I should have checked with my calipers to be sure on the crappy dealer frame that came with two screws. Will verify tonight and post.

I actually got the black frame. I wasn't sure how close their blue would be to Phytonic blue.

I just measured the screws holding the dealer frame. They are 4.82 mm x 8.00 mm, so yes, the G05 uses M5 screws. I went with 10 mm because the plate frame uses stick on standoffs.

Here's the WeatherTech frame I'm using. Clear lens (integral to the frame) covers the license plate and keeps it clean.

Looks like you have a clear plastic cover on your plate, yes? I just got pulled over today and given a ticket by our county dep sheriff for having a plastic cover on my plate. He said there's no state in the US where its legal. I've had covers on my plates for most of my entire driving life.
I said, well, I bought the plate cover right down the street here at Auto Zone, you mean they can legally sell them here in NY, I can legally buy them here in NY but I can't legally use it here in NY? His reply was that if I read the back of the packaging the plastic cover comes in, it will say its legal for non road use vehicles. I plan to go to Auto Zone and have a look. In the meantime I did look up the law and it does support what he said, at least here in NY. Ugh.

According to NYS law, even clear is illegal because it can, at certain angles, cause reflections that block automatic license plate readers from getting a clear pic of the entire plate. Automatic readers are becoming somewhat common place now at turnstiles, on police cars, etc. Ok, I get it, but come on, why allow the sale of them if I can't use them. Who would think to read the entire packaging of every single thing we buy just looking for the legalities, if, ands and buts?

I just read Florida law (Florida Statutes 316.605) and even plate frames are considered illegal. Ive gotten stopped before and never had an issue with plate frames, but I guess its up the officers discretion.

Will these screws work for the G05?

Depending on how thick your plate frame is if you are using one, yes. I’ll find out today if my 10 mm long screws are too long and bottom out or just right with my BMW frame and its rubber spacers.

Officer was probably trying to determine your speed, and couldn’t due to the cover. My guess is that is why he stopped you.

Radar/speed detecting tech probably changes constantly like everything else. Remember the days when people would use aluminum foil to foil radar speed traps?

I have a new TomTom, which shows radar traps and known speed cameras. It will automatically disable the radar tech when in a state or country where detectors are illegal. It will still SHOW the radar when it detects it. But I guess it turns off something that makes it legal.

Virginia is such a state. I often drive into Virginia and will have to pay more attention to what it actually does.

I love my new tomTom, and it is SO much better than the nav in the car. Yesterday I asked it to find an auto zone store (to buy wash/wax) and it failed miserably. Crazy stupid nav unit. Im using my tomtom as my dashboard, essentially.

Correct, that's a transparent covering over my plate. You can inform your kind public servant that Oregon has no restrictions on covering the plate. The statute that covers frames is ORS 803.550 (2c), but would not apply to a clear cover:

(2) A registration plate is illegally altered for purposes of this section if the plate has been altered, modified, covered or obscured in any manner including, but not limited to, the following:

(a) Any change of the color, configuration, numbers, letters or material of the plate.

(b) Any material or covering, other than a frame or plate holder, placed on, over or in front of the plate that alters the appearance of the plate.

(c) Any frame or plate holder that obscures the numbers, letters or registration stickers, so as to render them unreadable.

The Florida statute you are likely referring to states "Nothing shall be placed upon the face of a Florida plate except as permitted by law or by rule or regulation of a governmental agency." Taking those words literally, you can't use fasteners to secure the plate to your vehicle since the head of the fastener contacts the face of the plate. Doesn't make sense, does it?

I put an Escort 9500ci on my daughter's car several years ago, and the rear infrared unit is secured to the rear plate via the plate's mounting fasteners. She was pulled by a motorcycle cop and cited for obscuring her plate since the that IR unit covered up a portion of the word "Oregon" on her plate. We took it to court, and it was dismissed. The moral to the story is that they can cite you, but that does not mean it will stick.

Polycarbonate license plate frames such as these are transparent to RADAR and LIDAR, so it would not interfere with measuring his speed. I think the fine public servant got up on the wrong side of the bed that morning.

He was not measuring my speed, we were on a busy shopping street and I was way under the limit.

Here is what it says for NY.. ..

Section 402
Distinctive number; form of number plates; trailers
Vehicle & Traffic (VAT)

1(b) Number plates shall be kept clean and in a condition so as to be easily readable and shall not be covered by glass or any plastic material, and shall not be knowingly covered or coated with any artificial or synthetic material or substance that conceals or obscures such number plates or that distorts a recorded or photographic image of such number plates, and the view of such number plates shall not be obstructed by any part of the vehicle or by anything carried thereon, except for a receiver-transmitter issued by a publicly owned tolling facility in connection with electronic toll collection when such receiver-transmitter is affixed to the exterior of a vehicle in accordance with mounting instructions provided by the tolling facility.
..
..
8. The violation of this section shall be punishable by a fine of not less than twenty-five nor more than two hundred dollars

Out of curiosity, is it common to be stopped for something like this? I have to believe he had better things to do than to stop you for this...

I've had plastic plate covers for the past 30 yrs on all my vehicles so I would say it is not common. Possibly they are cracking down on it due to the rise of camera based readers but I would have appreciated an educational warning, not a ticket!
