I read/watched a video somewhere online that said with the redesign they had shifted the battery which would allow for 3rd-row seating. Don't know if that is 100% accurate.

Slapping a BMW logo and swapping out the sliding doors fixes/masks that for many. I have a minivan and was hoping this new X5 would look more like a sporty vehicle I could occasionally drive my kids in rather than be a minivan substitute.
From a driving dynamics standpoint, comparing a minivan to an X5 is like comparing a 335xi to a Porsche 911 Carrera 4S. Vastly different expriences in both cases.

To your point, some X5 owners are not interested in the performance difference between a Kia and and X5. But there are a lot of other drivers, like me, who want an SUV but still get the driving experience I'm used to from a BMW sedan.

Pacificas have good handling characteristics too, 0.87g or better in some reviews and a Toyota Sienna SE handles well also but that's not the point. The point is the people concerned with packing in 3 rows of people and about hybrids/gas mileage probably are also not testing the limits of the handling or driving dynamics but choose a luxury SUV bc of a fear of how they are perceived by others if seen in a minivan. The vehicles dimensions and shapes are obviously changing to accommodate some of these buyers not just the enthusiasts.

You make a good point. I totally fit in that category. I have no interest in a minivan. My sister has a new Pacifica and she loves it. I've ridden in it and its a very nice vehicle, but I have no interest in a minivan. Honestly, I can't say if its because of image or simply I personally want better driving dynamics. Probably both. I don't want the 3rd row but I know some people do. If I needed a people hauler, a minivan might jump on my radar screen, who knows.

Interesting side note: In checking cars.com, there are about 16,000 new and used X5's for sale in the US right now. Of those, 639 are listed as having the third row seat, or about 1 in 25.

I currently have a Mercedes GLC 300, looking to trade in for a potential BMW X5 plug-in hybrid. Do guys have any recommendations? How is this compared to a Q7 (read that a plug in version was coming for it as well)?

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank You.

Although this thread has pictures of the new hybrid version — with the charger door on the left-front clearly visible — a sales rep emailed today: “What I heard from my BMWNA rep is that BMWAG will skip the Hybrid and come out with full electric in the X5 some time end of next year.”

I wonder how the salesman would know?

I don't think they will be coming out with a fully electric version anytime soon. For me personally, a car with 50 miles of electric range and to have the option of gas as well is ideal! I'm hoping a car manufacturer can achieve this in the near future.

while unconfirmed, according to the unveiling of the 45e today....the answer is no. But the new figures are amazing. The e-range is 50 miles and the ICE is a 3.0L turbo 6

don't hold your breath. I had a preview of the X7 last week in Monterey. The 3rd row is about the size of the last gen Audi Q7 3rd row. It's tiny, though it does have power folding 2nd row captain chairs though.

I say the best PHEV SUV in the business is still the XC90 T8. Thats' probably what I'll buy at this point.

Really useful insight! Thanks. Xc90 is a contender. Especially the 2019 one with a larger gas tank compared to the 2018 13.2 gallon tank.
