Many thanks to Palbay!!

IMO it is a good time for those interested in PHEV SUV's. When we picked up our Cayenne S E-Hybrid's they were the only option.

Now the history is going to repeat again. My range over is 4 years old and I'm in the market for a plug-in hybrid suv and have a hard task of choosing between x5 and new ranger rover sport hybrid.
Checking Land Rover USA website, I found the decision is not that hard after all: the new design, significant improvements in electronics, choices of colors and options put Range Rover sport ahead of the game again.

And I'm a hardcore Bmw fan!
The RR doesn't work for me because of the front location of the charging port. I'd never be able to open it and plug in without leaning over the front fender because of limited room in the garage and then get dirt on my clothes absent a perfectly clean car. I'd say that RR took a shortcut to making a fender flap, by using a grill location and this "could" cause others, like me, to eliminate them. Of course, this presumes that the typical RR purchaser even thinks about this before purchase. We have an opportunity for mfgs to cause compatibility problems up the road with varying locations for the charging ports. So far, all of the vehicles I've looked at have the port on the left front fender for plug-ins and the right rear fender for all-electric. This meant that I could locate my Level 2 charger in the garage with some expectation of keeping it in the same place with a new car. I'm on my third electric/ PHEV vehicle, now, and this is the sort of thing that only becomes apparent at a later time.

That should be a good 20K higher than what the X5 is priced at. Plus, Porsche doesn't discount much, so it could be as much as a 25K difference overall. That is a big $$$ difference, at least to me. Though the Cayenne is damn nice, I'd have to strip the thing down so much to keep it under 80K (i.e. no PASM, no air suspension, no 4-wheel steering, no PDCC - pretty much all the things that make it drive really well) that it just wouldn't be worth it to me.

As for the Velar, that is a smaller vehicle than an X5, so not really a direct competitor. Closer to the new X3 in size. The Velar doesn't really drive that well either, at least for an enthusiast. The Jaguar F-Pace is pretty fun though, but the interior is really cheap (I had a rental 2018 3.5t for a week recently) and the tech/infotainment system is a joke. Rear visibility sucks out of it too (same issue with the Velar). The Velar fixes the interior, but it is just too heavy with all its unnecessary off-road hardware (seriously, what owner ever takes their Velar/RR Sport off road??? .1%???)
Perhaps one should say "If you have to ask the price of maintenance, you can't afford it", but that is also a consideration when choosing between BMW and Porsche. My 2014 991 C2S cost some $400 for the first and third year's scheduled maintenance, nearly $800 for the second, and $2000 for the fourth year. I have yet to pay a nickel for scheduled maintenance on my BMW's.

It would look a lot better if the front bumper extended down further and was a little more aggressive. The disproportion between the small front bumper and the giant rear bumper is what gives it a minivan look from further away. I really like the styling details a lot so hopefully the X5 M will at least have better front to rear vertical proportions but it would have been nice for the normal models to not have this weird look.

It's funny people's reaction to the front grille. It smacks some people in the face, others it doesn't bother. I'm in the latter category.

So it seems as though the M Sport can be ordered either with the standard all chrome grille or with the traditional M Sport grille i.e. chrome surround with black slats?

Have to say I'm a little underwhelmed after being reasonably positive based on the official press shots (good job salespersons). Not sure if its due to the hybrid model spec but it just looks so goddam........eerrmmmm.......boring!

Funny how different people's perspectives are. I had two E70 X5M's and loved them. The F15 did absolutely nothing for me - it was a bland improvement with major minivan-esque proportions. Major letdown compared to the E70. For our SUV stable, we went to the RRS instead of the F15 X5... just couldn't do it.

The G05, totally different story. Significant interior improvements, better body lines, and a much more muscular non-minivan stance. We'll have an ///M in the garage when released.

Exactly my thoughts. I had an E70 LCI that I adored. I still stop when I see them on the road and wonder if that's a new X5. I've had a F15 for four years and while it drives better and the tech is better than the E70, it always disappoints from the outside, especially the back end from the side. Bloated. Still on the fence about the G05. The real life shots in this thread are a lot more similar in bulk to the F15 than the configurator and other online shots I've been pouring over. Maybe it's just black, but BMW really blew it with the F15 in black and I'd hoped they'd fix that with the G05.

How does the RRS compare in terms of driving? I always pause at that second behind, soon to be 2 seconds behind the G05, unless you get the supercharged engine. And it's so tall, I've wondered how it would handle compared to the X5.

I love these shots of the real world black G05.......it’s beautiful (like our new black G01), except that rear end design exercise. I keep thinking last gen Tiguan (the black one we traded), and the hex exhausts are way to trendy.

It couldn’t have been a deadline they were up against?

There is a cover missing in the front. But what's behind it? Looks like a camera.

Its a Kia Sedona with roundels. Then again that's probably why a lot of people like it. Discussion of 3rd rows, hybrids, etc. Most of the owners of these type of vehicles would probably be better off in a minivan but it causes a personal identity crisis. Slapping a BMW logo and swapping out the sliding doors fixes/masks that for many. I have a minivan and was hoping this new X5 would look more like a sporty vehicle I could occasionally drive my kids in rather than be a minivan substitute.

Damn I thought the Jeep guys were a bunch of cry babies over the Wrangler redesign. This is an SUV and not a supercar. Im not sure what ground breaking design some of you were thinking was coming but the writing has been on the wall for a while now. No big surprises and leaps and bounds better than competitors.

Thank you for the real world pictures!

Generally, I like it.

Disappointing for me to see the oversized grilles and generic taillights both made it to final production. Both totally throw off the proportions, and mess up the whole look of the front and rear ends, repectively.
