Bumpy ride?

Hi -

Wondering if this is somewhat normal - recently picked up a 2020 x5 40i with air suspensions. It has about 50k km on it. On uneven roads you can definitely feel the car swaying form one side to another pretty easily - feels like I’m driving a wrangler or something. Drove my buddys x5 a few weeks ago and felt it it was absorbing the uneven roads better without moving the car too much - a smoothing calmer drive.

Don’t care too much about until my kid is in the back and want to prevent any nausea.

Any thoughts?

My gf also mentioned something like that in my 24 X6 M60i with just regular M Adapative suspension.
Supposely, having Dynamic Handling Package (DHP) added to the car helps with this, but I do not believe you can get DHP with air suspension.
Have you tried changing suspension setting to sport? That should tighten up the suspension to reduce bounciness feeling that you get in comfort setting.

Doesn't sound normal, the ride should be very smooth. As mentioned, have the suspension checked out.

Are you using the cruise control and lane centering feature? I get that feeling sometimes when the vehicle bobs to the left and right a bit as it attempts to keep itself in the lane.

Will try. But still shouldn’t be the case unless it’s “normal”. Will get it checked

What tires and size wheels are you riding on? What tires pressure? The X5 should ride smooth with air suspension and with 20s plus wheels. No issues with my 50e on the 20s and air suspension. Riding on continental LX tires with 35/38 psi front/rear.

21s, 275 at the front and 315s in the back - Summers.
Pressure as recommended as per side.

What brand tires and how many miles on them since you bought a 2020 X5? After 3 years summer tires will get harder and bounce around more on my experience.

PIRELLI PZERO

Car has 31k miles now - previous owner had winters so not sure how much summers were used.

Could be worn tires and you are experiencing “tram lining” on those uneven surfaces. That’s pretty common with larger tires as they lose tread.

Adjust the tire pressure to the one mentioned on the door jam. Then reset the pressure sensor to see the updated pressure. Re-adjust by adding or removing air. You might have to repeat these steps a couple of times to get a accurate reading and then you’ll be good to go.

These cars are stiff riding! The runflats only makes it worse. Try changing tires to the most comfortable rated non runflat tires you can find. Also reduce the rear tire pressure by about 3-4 lbs . Its higher in rear to reduce understeer but you will likely not be able to tell a difference. Ive been running 34 front and 38 rear with 20” Pirelli AS plus 3 tires( non runflat)and the car rides a bit better.

Overall I am not a fan of the suspensions on the X5. Too stiff for a luxury vehicle IMHO.

I have the air suspension like the OP and cannot imagine calling it 'stiff'. If anything it's too floaty and doesn't let you feel the road nearly as much as my old E70 did.
