Fuel Gauge Wrong/Won’t Go to Full

Filled up our 2022 X5 today—it was just below 1/4 tank of gas and I put about $70 worth of gas in.

When I got in the car, I was surprised to see that the gas gauge was showing just shy of 3/4 full and range appropriate to that fuel level.

I could not conceive $70 would not have filled the tank from where it was, but tried to add more fuel—I was only able to pump about another $1, so it was definitely full.

The app indicated the same as the fuel gauge—71% full.

Driving, the range adjusted as I went.

I thought it might recover after the car slept, but it has not.

Talked to dealer and bringing it in next week—anyone seen this? Any ideas?

Thanks.

I would suggest wait a bit, maybe even reboot iDrive. If issue presist, then go to dealer. The fuel gauge has act weird all my BMWs at one point

Do you refuel WITH the engine running? Or do you shut the engine down before refueling?

i can see where you're going with this question, and i noticed early in my driving career (before digital gauges) that the fuel gauge wasn't accurate if refueling with the engine running which would correct itself after a period of rest, so i personally always shut off the engine when refueling, but the OP mentioned he let the car sleep, and the fuel level was still the same.

My parents are having a similar issue right now as they are making a 4 hour trip back home from Indiana!
They have a ‘22 bmw x5 xDrive40
First, the check engine light came on.
No other notifications came up on iDrive.
Thought it was just a sensor.
They then filled up a full tank of gas, but 30-45 min later, fuel gauge went all the way down to a range of 50 miles.
They stopped to fill up gas, but it would only let them put 1-2 gallons.
Restarted car, no improvement in the range.
Did the OP ever figure out the solution to the problem?

Yes--it was resolved by the dealer.

Initially they thought it was a software issue, as there was a bulletin for something similar. That did not fix it in my case. Problem turned out to be a fault in the actual sensor in the fuel tank, which needed to be replaced. That involved removing the back seat and opening up the fuel tank--and a potent smell of gasoline in the car the first couple of days we got it back.

All is well now, though.

Good luck with your issue. Hopefully it is just the software glitch.

Hey, did they replace just the sensor or the whole fuel pump ?
My car has a simillar issue - when I fill up it shows empty, when I leave it for some time it shows full, but when I start driving it drops to empty in no time at all.
