10k Service Quandry

I’m closing in on 9,000 miles on my M60i. We are heading out on a 2,000 mile round trip on May 1 which means we will be nearing 11,000 miles upon our return. Should I have the 10k service done before we depart or when we return? Is there any grace period warranty wise?

Isn't just an oil change? Sure they check this, check that but at 9K miles it's unlikely they will find anything wrong that you don't already know about. I'd give your dealer a call because they go by the service indicator, not the mileage per se. If the service indicator isn't calling for an oil change before you go, some dealers won't do it for free but hopefully once you explain your situation, they will take you in before you go. If not, you can get it done at any BMW dealer along your travels, I've done that before.

Just for clarity, there is no 10k service. 10k miles is the starting point for CBS and then it can be adjusted depending on driving style, conditions, etc.

What does CBS say as far as it being due? Being a little over shouldn't hurt anything but if you want to get it early just check with your dealer. Many will not cover it under Ultimate Care unless it is due in CBS.

Pretty much what Marty said ^

Been there before (with my Audi). Just drove an did it when I got back - no issue but again, not BMW.

Personally wouldn't sweat it, but yeah, curious too on a "grace period" warranty-wise - hopefully someone w/ experience there can speak to that.

I echo TurtleBoy, some dealers will accommodate an early service given the circumstances and explanation. You lose nothing by just asking.

Thanks and if I understand correctly the attached screen shot indicates 2113 miles away from oil change??

Yes, you are correct. That will likely increase when you are on your roadtrip due to more highway usage.

BMWs have had condition based service logic for many years. I had a 2011, it said 4K miles until service, then I went on a cross-country road trip that was mostly interstate driving. I drove nearly 4K miles on that trip, and when I got back, it still said 4K miles until service needed. In the USA, they’ll do an oil change when CBS calls for it, or 1-year, whichever comes first. Unless your trip is likely to be lots of stop and go in a city, it will probably be more than fine through that trip. As noted, after an oil change and the logic gets reset, it starts at 10K-miles, but it could be sooner or much longer before it triggers the need for an oil change. Cruising at fairly steady speeds for longer time on an interstate is pretty easy on an engine and its oil…short hops, lots of stop and go isn’t. Racing and using maximum RPM is also tough, as is towing something, especially if it’s up and down mountains. Typical US interstate, generally not a big deal unless caught in a city in stop and go during rush hour.
