It wasn't that bad. Its name was "Thog." Had a heated seat. Rode pretty smooth. Every vehicle has a quirk or two; in Thog's case I had to develop a sense for when it was going to rear up and hump one of the other calves, so I could grab 2 handfuls of fur and hang on.

We had an old Ford F250 with a 3-on-the-tree and drum brakes all the way around. I drove that thing starting when I was 14. If it was wet or even humid out, there was ZERO modulation ability in that braking system. If you even looked at the brake pedal, it'd pitch you into the windshield.

We had the same vehicle on the Naval base. Don't forget about skinny tires, snap oversteer with the added bonus of farm plow understeering. You hit the wall with the front AND the back of the vehicle with the same tank slapper. Sublime in every way!

And about a 1/2-turn of sloppy "nothingness" in the steering.

My first car didn't even have a side view mirror on the passenger side. They weren't required yet. No power seats, roll up windows and drum brakes. I did however have power steering.

And by the way, parallel parking on the streets of NYC without power steering was one hell of a workout.

EDIT - And it stalled regularly in the rain.

My new GLC 300 has a push button electric start. What's old is new again.

My 1st mode of transportation was a used Schwinn with a banana seat, ape hangers, extended forks, a slick on the back wheel and a playing card in the forks attached with a clothes pin.

Lol, same as my first car. A 1994 Ford Escort, I always got the question regarding the one mirror. Once ran it out of oil and it was perfectly fine, after it got passed on to my brother he crashed it into a pole..... And still it was fine, just a new radiator and bumper, thing was a tank! Although I don't belong in this thread just like to see what you old heads are up to.

Not quite the same. Mine was a 1973 Ford LTD. And it was yellow But it got me where I wanted to go.

I had an Orange Krate, if you remember what those are. Had the "birth control" shifter right on the top tube.

First car was an early 60's Dodge station wagon with a push button transmission, burned oil, and had a busted out rear window. God, the fumes and smell. Didn't kill me so all's good.

First car was an '85 Grand Marquis that was about 14 years old at the time, and I was 18. Man I hated that thing, it would stall randomly on the highway, in intersections, anywhere. It is disconcerting when you are in the fast lane / middle lane and suddenly everything goes quiet and you have to make your way to the shoulder with no power.

One time it stalled in the middle of an intersection (was trying to make a left) and the female cop pulled up and asked if I knew I couldn't park there. I looked at her to make sure she was human and from this planet and acknowledged that I did, in fact, know that. And that I was attempting to get it going again.

But the only way to get it going was to pop the hood, take off the carb cover and prop the butterfly valve wide open and then crank it with the gas to the floor. So I always carried a clothespin in the car so that I could use it to prop the valve open and then go back to work on starting it.

But that car gave me the drive that I needed to work hard to make sure I'd never have to have that type of unreliable car again, so I appreciate the car to be honest. And it was given to me on loan from my grandparents too and helped me through first year or two of university, so I am grateful to them for that too.

Not going to garner much sympathy with this crowd but here is the first car I drove. My parents bought in new in Dec 1964. It was the first car for all three of us and my older brother still has it, hence the modern photo. It has also been restored since I drove at 15 yrs old.

My actual first car was a 1976 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, in 1980. I couldn't afford to pay anyone else to work on it, so I did everything myself. Never had to crack open the motor, but over time I covered most of the rest of the car. Had to replace a starter with the car parked on the street at -45 wind chill. I don't know which was stiffer, the wires on the starter or my fingers. Not a good time. But I got it done. Did brakes on all 4 corners, exhaust, rebuilt the valve body in the transmission, rebuilt the carburetor multiple times.
