M Sport 50i - the final straw.

This $100k M Sport 50i I got for my wife is now confirmed to be the last BMW to ever see the inside of my garage.

The final straw? Not all the iDrive software bugs and insane complexity, features missing or not working, marginal seats or the poorly performing 'driver assistance features'. Nope, none of that did it. I tried really hard to like it.

The final straw was when my wife said, "this car feels unstable sometimes when I'm driving it." She's right! I can't quite pin it down but sometimes the damn thing just feels squirrelly, off balance or unstable as she says. Not something you tolerate at any price.

Every time I drive my Mercedes I'm reminded of how superior it is in every way.

Um. Sounds like you need to take it in for service... instability hasn't been a complaint... quite the opposite actually.

I would make sure it is set up right. Turn off the lane steering assist and only use wheel vibration on all lane departure. turn off auto lane change feature as well.
Automated driving works wonderfully. Use it every day in Boston traffic.
so it has to be the set up.

This post seems like a giant troll. I drive a 50i with DHP and nothing about it feels unstable. I've also hit 145mph and guess what. it still feels rock solid

Sorry to hear you are having all of the problems, especially the instability as we have not heard that. I would take it in to get checked and hopefully they will find and fix it. They can also give you the March update and hopefully you will be good to go.

Unlike Ilyam5 , I have all assistance systems turned on and have not had any problems with them. I always recommend a new owner keep all of them on, set lane departure to medium, and see how things go.

Good luck with everything and let us know how it turns out.

This is a known issue. Let me guess, was it cold outside? There is a thread called “Steering Issues”. Search it and dig in. You are not the only one.

The steering issue is only in cold temps, below around 15F for me. When it is warmer my 50i is fine.

Yes, plenty warm here in Florida. No troll here, I've owned roughly a dozen new BMWs and the last couple of them were unimpressive for various reasons. For at least ten years I couldn't read the radio dial without taking off my dang sunglasses!

The great guys on this forum are a wellspring of quality information and I've followed a great deal of the advice in the setup etc. The bottom line for me is I've run out of patience at these prices. And I can't exactly go into the dealership with "I have an intermittent problem I can't really describe" and expect to be taken seriously. I'll get the big fixall firmware update if it isn't just vaporware whenever it appears but I'm never putting up with this again.

You don't sound like a troll. Rather, you sound like someone who is just plain not happy with the G05. Some of your issues will be resolved as BMW figures out how to fix bugs that should not be bugs in the first place. Most of us 1st year owners are annoyed with these issues but put up with them for the greater good of driving an awesome vehicle. Your issues go past the bugs and into the stability of of the G05. After researching this car and reading most all the reviews and forum posts I can't remember anyone else reporting the stability issues you are reporting. As others have said, it looks like there is something specifically wrong with your car. If you're fed up, sell it and move on. Mercedes are nice vehicles too. I rented a new E-class last year in Europe for a month and was blown away by how nice it was. It definately exceeded my expecations. That said, it did drive a bit like a couch on wheels. As a consumer, there are so many great choices these days. I hope you find something you like.

My 40i work air suspension is supremely poised and stable and light on its feet compared to my f15 30d with m suspension which had way too much body roll and always felt heavy.

Our 50i is literally the opposite of unstable. Most precision drive dynamics of any SUV I've ever driven.

Maybe his is a lemon? at first I thought it he was trolling to some degree but there's no way a normal 50i would be unstable

Our G05 is one of the most stable vehicles I've ever driven. Put a couple hundred miles on it already...

Either that or it's the "driving aids" like lane assist trying to kick in for no reason. I've driven multiple vehicles now with LKA and even when you're driving straight on the road something weird will occasionally trigger it and it is unsettling at times. The tech isn't perfect yet.

Also, 1st year of any maker is always going to have issues. I'm pretty sure the 2020 GLE isn't going to be perfect out of the gate either.

Agreed which is why I think he has something really wrong. Mine has 2400 miles on the clock so far, it's been perfect

I believe it was released last Wednesday, see if your dealer can upgrade you to 2019/03.22 and hopefully your problems will go away. Since your intermittent feel problem has not be felt by others I'm not real confident.

Something more serious is sounds wrong with his car. I wouldn't trust a software update to rid my problems if my car felt unstable. Only thing that could ease my mind is a different car. Once that instability creeps into your mind with a vehicle it's over.

Why don't you drive it yourself and push it hard and see if you notice the same stability issues your wife reported? It may just be a matter of perception.

This 50i can be driven very very quickly with amazing handling, I have confirmed that.

She never drives the car enthusiastically and never uses cruise control etc so what I suspect she's experiencing is some odd interference from the driver assist systems.

I've turned off the ridiculous and dangerous lane keeping steering assist, the first time the car yanked the steering wheel out of her hands she would park it and I would have it for sale. I left only the blindspot warning function on. I have once noticed the feeling of the car steering 'hunting' but it's not consistent. I agree there's something wrong in the system, my conclusion is that it's not all that rare and it is unacceptable that it exists. The G05 was clearly rushed to market and we're all beta testers. Not cool.

My 2018 MB 450SV, while a completely different vehicle, has their latest driver assist and safety features that function far better in the real world and none of them need to be defeated to have a satisfying driving experience.

I will get the dealer to upgrade the software and if that fixes anything I will be delighted to report the news to the forum.
