Hacking the semi-autonomous driving

Semi-autonomous driving on this car is amazing. I say it's on par with Tesla's auto pilot.

What annoys me is the message that says that I gotta hold the wheel.

Any hacks you guys have on some tool I can make to bypass that? I know some guys who attach a mini dumbbell to the wheel.

It doesn't seem to need weight just a light touch on the wheel. Maybe try putting clamp somewhere one the wheel. Experiment and let us know what works.

So I'll be the killjoy here. I've driven a Tesla with auto pilot for the past 3 years, and will be picking up my X5 in a few weeks. One of the reasons I decided on the X5 is the driving assist features.

There's a reason the nag is there. Extremely dangerous to drive without it. When I first got my Tesla, there was no nag. The more comfortable you get with the car driving on its own, the more dangerous it is. I found myself taking my eyes off the road for too long at times. Tesla added the nag via a software update after some well publicized deaths related to drivers not paying attention while on auto pilot. I don't care what car it is, self driving is nowhere near perfect and doing anything to defeat the nag isn't a good idea IMHO. I mostly keep my hands lightly at the bottom of the wheel while resting my arms on my lap while driving to avoid the alerts.

I have seen a video on YouTube with a small water bottle pushed in to the corner of the wheel that allegedly fools the system in to thinking there is human intervention.

However, you are a fool for even considering this. It is not an autonomous driving system, it is a driver assistance system. Driving without holding the wheel and paying attention is just plain stupid.

The tesla hack used to be wedge an orange in the corner of the steering wheel - i in no way condone you doing this however.

Not all Tesla drivers are idiots. Just like not all BMW drivers are pricks. Either way, hacking the driver assist feature to eliminate the alerting is stupid, whichever car.

Clearly you took this way too personally. I was referring to the specific subset of drivers so don't pay attention and crash or are literally sleeping while driving.

Well, only a little... More my lame attempt at a joke. I realized after I posted that I forgot to add a smiley face to my original post.

Good thing your in Canada, I wont have to worry about you on the road
What your wanting to do is just plain dumb, please use your common sense. If not for yourself, but the people riding in your car or other people on the road.

I've been driving for 40 yrs any time I have to take my hands off the wheel for a brief period my knee or leg takes over the wheel. I'm always paying attention to road not like some people in the Tesla videos. But I've noticed it keeps the wheel green.

My wife and I just drove her new X5 from South Carolina back to California. I loved the driving assistant feature, but no way is able to drive by itself. Hacking the system to circumvent holding onto the wheel would be crazy. Many times the system would not recognize the lane, ding, and then shut off without a lot of warning. Having your hand on the wheel is important.

That said, I did spend a lot of time with my left forearm resting on my knee with my thumb and index finger lightly around the lower left part of the wheel (7 o'clock or so). Thats all it took to keep the system from warning me to grab the wheel. I think this approach is a perfect compromise. I have to hold the wheel and I have to pay attention, but I don't have to keep both hands on the wheel.

I wanna hack mine just because when I hold the steering wheel, I keep get notifications that I’m not holding it. It wants my hand wrapped all around it. Normally I just sort of pinch it with thumb and pointer finger. I can put my knee on it and it works fine but that’s not as safe.

Mine does this too, sometimes 2 hands fully on the wheel tightly and it will still complain.

Yep, knee on the wheel is the best I've found.
Water bottle doesn't work, tried that.
