thinking about buying a pre-LCI X5M

Like the title says, I’m thinking about getting a 2020-2023 X5M but am curious why they (mostly) have pretty low miles.

Is this vehicle not one you all would recommend driving daily?

I’ve owned 3 X5 i50’s and love each one. I’ve also had 2 M3’s. So getting a Sporty X5 seems like it would be perfect….??

I have a 21 and it has low miles(9k) because I didn’t need to commute during Covid. It’s a great car can’t go wrong👍

No complaints on ride quality? I’ve driven one recently and it didn’t seem too rough, yet I’ve seen many complaints about it.

Do you drive yours daily, or is it a weekend vehicle for you?

Ride quality is subjective to the person and also how your local roads are. When I think my X5MC rides firm my buddy who drives a X3M thinks my car rides like a dream.

I daily my car and absolutely love it. Its such an "event" to drive which most suvs can't provide. The only thing is you have to be that person that wants it. My dad would absolutely hate my car because he values MPG and only cares about getting from point A to B in the most comfortable manner.

That said a pre-owned X5M is the way to go considering you are saving a substantial amount of money and you are not giving up anything when compared to the LCI.

I bought a 2022 with 6,000 miles on it in May of 2023. I daily drive mine with no issues. Was planning on getting the LCI but when I found out Donington Grey was dropped from the color list I then searched for a used one. Zero regrets, love it. And like the comment above, saved a substantial amount of money.

I've recently added a full Dinan exhaust and like it even more.

To add: Nov 11, 2023, I found a low mileage 2023 X5MC only 2k miles. Previous owner paid $133K in May of 2023, I paid $100K in Nov. Clean carfax, one owner, flawless. The previous owner traded it for a Land Rover--thus me buying this one at a Land Rover dealer. I am very happy with this new vehicle. Like Alan stated, buying pre-owned is the way to go --IMHO

Thank you MADBMWX5MC. That’s the route I’m going this time. The decision was either a used X5M or a new M60i.

I’m 95% sure I can live with a “harsh” ride as my kids are grown and my wife rarely rides with me.

Ha! I hear ya, I traded a 2019 BMW X3 M40i for this one, no complaints with harshness of the new one. BTW, I noticed your are also in VA...I had little luck with the VA inventory on good, low mileage ones. Had to venture way outside --matter of fact, the one I have I got it in CT.

That’s what I’m finding as well. Did you purchase it sight-unseen and have it shipped?

I asked to FaceTime with the dealer and did a walkaround virtually. Dealer was very accommodating. Then drove the trade in up to CT and drove down to VA with the X5MC

The FaceTime thing is a good idea. IÂ’ll see about that tomorrow.

Unfortunately, driving to pick this car up is out of the question for me. 18+ hours is more than IÂ’m willing to drive to trade in. Plus itÂ’s a Tesla. Of all the cars I would drive on a road trip, Tesla is at the very bottom. 👎

Honestly the X5MC suspension is as harsh/stiff as my previous F10M5C, no complain just setting expectations.

I haven’t had the opportunity to ride in or drive one of those, but I assume it would be similar to my last m3c but on a bigger platform.

Just bought one and absolutely love it. The ride is firm but not terrible at low speeds….at high speeds it’s lovely. And this car is pretty much always at high speeds with that stout V8 and slick transmission.

Test drove an M50 and could totally see how it’s a great general purpose SUV. The X5MC was totally different in terms of ride and handling. So much sportier. I couldn’t resist.

I got a new one last summer when they were almost gone. I'd been following the threads on the LCI and decided to get one of the few remaining 2023s. I drive it daily and am very happy with the ride comfort.

And I love having rear comfort access and an off button for auto stop-start, which are gone for 2024.

I read something about the auto stop-start not having an option anymore and I absolutely hated that on my older x5s!! Hopefully they add the option back in to switch that off in the future.

The X5MC overall always feels like it wants to be driven aggressively. The gearing/sound/suspension is all setup like its ready to have some fun. With simple mods like an intake and exhaust it makes it even more so. I think that is the biggest difference between the M50/M60's and the full M models. Those drive more like your average X5s but with alot more power where as the X5M drives more like a M car but with a X5 body.

This is the first time I decided to buy out my X5M lease and i typically change cars every 2-3 years. Its THAT good imo...

we're twins. literally bought a DG with $6k miles. now adding full dinan exhaust (mid pipe and rear). other than the one from dinan's website, i've yet to hear that set up so taking a bit of a chance. we'll see if it works out!

This is very reassuring.

I wired the money to the dealer this afternoon. I’m still a little hesitant to get excited since I haven’t personally laid eyes on it before I wired the money, but it’s a done deal. Now I nervously wait!

Fist off congratulations, and I am certain you will enjoy it.

I came from having an F80 for the weekends and F85 which I dailied. Ended up loving the practicality and fun of driving an X5M everyday, I traded both for the F95 LCI.

Completely agree with Alan comments. Every drive is an event and I really like how the comfort setting makes it feel like a sleeping beast ready to go. Can’t still drive it somewhat chill and then just step on it and it just goes.

Quick notes. Compared to my F80 with the HAS kit it is WAY more comfortable and less harsh. If your M3C was stock it might ride comparable to it but the added weight and sound deadening will make it more luxury of a ride.
For the auto start, yeah can’t be disabled fully but can program M1/M2 to turn off. So my daily procedure is to either turn off when I start using the button or wait for engine to warm up and then I always go on M1 which I have set to sport/comfort/comfort with D2 shifts which is perfect for mixed city / highway driving.

I'm also looking to buy a 2023 X5M but are any of you owners buying an extended warranty or worried the longevity of the S63 engine? Planning on dailying this for 5 years at least. Hoping in that time just wearables that I have to budget for.

My other option was getting a new X3M only because the S58 (really the B58) has proven reliability?
