"Kick to close" trunk and walking away doesn't lock the car

Whenever I get out and just head away from the vehicle, it locks itself with the familiar beep because I have the keys in my pocket.

But if I go to the trunk and either close it with the button (not the lock button) or just kick to close and walk away, it doesn't lock the vehicle. I have to come back to it and then walk away for the proximity sensor to work.

Is there any way around this behavior (short of pushing the lock button on the top hatch)?

Kick to close always locks for me when I walk away so you may want to try rebooting iDrive to see if that makes a difference.

My understanding is if you close it with the non-lock button that will override the comfort locking.

I find kick to close way more convenient than pushing the button, but it never locks the car. I guess I'll try rebooting idrive, although this behavior has been like this since we took delivery.

If you are out of "closing-" range (6 -8 ft) before the trunk is entirely closed the car won't lock anymore.. Just wait a few moments near the car until the trunk has closed completely and then walk away.. Should work normally...

holy crap I never knew that! I've been just kicking and walking off and the whole thing takes like a 3 seconds anyway so i'm definitely out of range by then. thank you!

You beat me to it. Was busy today and planned on posting the range issue this evening. Good job.

I guess it makes sense - the car locks when you walk out of the 6-8 ft range except if any of the doors are not closed (you can't lock the car with a door open). As the trunk is not closed, locking does not happen.

do I have to wait till the trunk is completely latched or can I start walking away 1 or two seconds into the process? they really should have built an override where if all the doors are closed and the trunk is being closed, it should assume the owner is presuming to lock the vehicle.

It is a matter of timing as far as how fast it is closing and how fast you are walking away. The majority of times I'm doing it is in my garage and I'm walking along the vehicle as it is closing so buy the time I get out of range it is closed and everything is then locked. The other times I have used it I kicked to close it and started walking away almost immediately and it locked. You may have to fool around with it.

Noticed the same on both my 3 and X5

Assume it has to do with proximity

It finally worked as it should. As has been pointed out, you have to basically wait until the trunk is fully closed before walking way. I guess that's fine, but it's also quite silly to just stand around for 3 seconds.
