M Sport Brakes?
I have a week 49 build, next week, so I guess this is the latest I can make changes.
I'm considering adding M-Sport Brakes. What's the difference to normal brakes, when do sport brakes make sense, or is it just a cosmetic option? Thanks! |

I’ve read that M brakes may make sense when using larger rims for a few reasons: 1) I’ve read here that larger rims need more brake force (not sure if that’s true) - M brakes use larger calipers/pads. 2) You can clearly see the calipers with the larger rims and the stock ones aren’t that impressive. I’m going with 19 inch rims and stock brakes... primarily because I prefer the less-harsh ride and I live in the Northeast, where potholes destroy large rims. They are bigger better calipers, but honestly I bought them for cosmetic reasons (especially after looking at the rusty crap on my F15).

The only exception is carbon ceramic brake discs which are not available and extremely expensive.

I asked similar question before but nobody seems knows the exact answer.
A lot of people said M sports use larger caliper and pads (including in this post) but there is no evidence to prove that. I really keen to know how many pistons on standard brake (front and rear) and M sports brake (front and rear)? At the mean time I would also like to know what is the diameter of brake pads on standard brake and M sports brake. The price to option M sports brake is only few hundred dollars so I guess there is no big difference between standard brake and M sports brake in performance. |

What's the brake dust like on G05 with m brakes? We get zero brake dust on our current F15 which was great. We have a 2016 m235 and that's a weekly clean up. I hope the G05 is not the same.

Yep that is definitely bigger - I believe both calipers are 4 piston, but the msport one is certainly bigger and piston outlines look to be larger pistons also which would indicate larger pads also.

I will have to look at them at the dealership when I go in there Saturday. We have the 22" wheels on the 19 X5 50i and the calipers look huge but they are not sport brakes at least they are not blue. I will compare when I see them. I would like to have mine powder coated but if the calipers are all together different than I won't. I am just thinking for a $650 build upcharge it can't be a whole lot of difference between the two and maybe it is the powder coating that they are upcharging for.
I do have a Alfa QV with Carbon Ceramic brakes. There is no brake dust with CCMs but yes they are costly but nice and also costly to replace but not for a long time. I can't see a reason to have CCMs on an SUV. Heck unless you are tracking you don't NEED them but they sure do fill that hole quite nicely on the sedan.

The front rotors are larger with MSport brakes -- 395x36 vs 348x30 (or 348x36 for vehicles with 3rd Row Seating). Brake pads have a larger area. The rear brakes are the same on all vehicles (but are matching blue for MSport).

The M pads are larger and a different compound. They also tend to be more dusty.

I almost went with the standard package. Happy I changed my build last minute. Bigger brakes look better with the 21 inch rims. Brake dust is still better than standard Bmw brakes from years ago.

It's hard to compare dust levels since I don't have both side by side, but the dust levels with my MSport brakes are not all that bad, in my opinion (they don't make noise, either). Certainly much better than the black dusty brakes from earlier BMWs.

Good to know. I know they have greatly reduced the dust over older models. I had a Z4 that I could literally drive around the block and the wheels would be coated with dust. My F10 was much better with far less dust.

There are actually 3 different brake setups available for the G05. 40i without 3rd row gets the basic spec, add 3rd row and/or 50i gets first upgrade, M Sport gets M upgrade. Full details are in the technical training documents pinned in this forum. No speculation required.

M Sport brakes bite a little harder, less pedal pressure to get the job done. The standard brakes have a softer pedal pressure, more pedal travel. The M Sport brakes are still a little soft to me, I just need to get calibrated to them.

I do find the MSport brakes to be a tad touchier than the non-MSports I've had on previous G05s (so not comparing apples to apples, I know). That is, they grip faster, so stopping can be less smooth. And they seem to let go quicker, so starting can be a bit jerkier when you're trying to smoothly inch out. At least, that's been my experience. Not all the time, so it could be a touch issue. No noise but I bedded them immediately, and I see no brake dust but I did get ceramic coating on the wheels and the 740M wheels have enough gray, which may help. |
