West Coast Delays

My X5 left the rail depot in Kansas City on 11/20 and was scheduled to be at the San Bernardino Railroad exchange on 11/28 but it's still "in transit." According to my SA, there are big delays (1-2 weeks) in processing the cars once they arrive at San Bernardino. After San Bernardino it has to go to Oxnard for final software updates and then goes to the dealership. Could be an issue for those expecting their cars to arrive in the last two weeks of the year.

My train left Nov 23rd and arrived San Bernardino this morning according to tracking information. Thats 13 days to get to the Port. Mine still shows In transit as well, so maybe there are delays at the VDC (although Mygarage status could take hours to update). I'm not sure about your comment on SW updates at Oxnard. That's may be old news, I've not seen anyone in SoCal do that, so I'd be curious where you get that. But I don't know really.

No delays that I heard of but could just be the start of them and the vehicle will definitely not go to Oxnard to get a software update.

SpeedyDad I would call BMW Genius to see what they say. You need a second opinion.

It goes to Oxnard after San Bernardino, as far as I know. Is that not correct? Oxnard is essentially like a BMW factory that can repair transit damage, perform service bulletins and recalls, software updates, etc.

No, they do not go there to get any updates, service, etc., damage is different. Just like all other vehicles delivered by truck in other parts of the country, they go to the dealer. If there are any outstanding issues the dealer takes care of it. Generally the dealer will not install the latest software update, the vehicle comes with whatever is installed at the factory.

Interesting, I'll call BMW Genius tomorrow. My SA said it would go to Oxnard next from SB rail depot. I asked if it got damaged during transit and he said no, that all cars go there. My 2018 M5 did, but it came on a boat, obviously. Thanks!

Yes, Oxnard is the VDC that is used for vehicles arriving from Europe. They may go there for distribution purposes since there may be efficiencies in that depending on destination but not for updates or anything. Here is an article on the Oxnard VDC from a few years ago.

My SA's response to me questioning if the X5 really has to go to Oxnard: "Lol. Yes. They are all controlled through Oxnard"

This guy has been a BMW SA for many years. Weird, right?

Like I said, they may go there for distribution but that is all. Just think about it, all other X5's, whether by truck or train, go directly to the dealer. Why would only the X5's that get unloaded in San Bernardino have to go to a VDC to get updates? It wouldn't make sense for them to do that.

Doing something for many years doesn't mean a person is good at it, not judging him. As we have seen time and time again, in general CA's know less than members here.

Not all all. I think the majority of SA’s are clueless to the overall production and delivery process. Many that I reached out to when shopping around couldn’t or wouldn’t answer if they had an allocation available. My own SA had no concept of rail delivery time. Told me, train would arrive in SB, 4 days from dispatch… then messaged later after saying looks like major train delays.

Well, that's how long it'd take to drive from SC to CA. So to the CA, that's how long a train should take, right?

I'm watching one that left Spartanburg on 12/3, and is now hanging out for 36 hours in the Austell intermodal facility. Fun.

as I said in my post above, it took 13 days for my train to arrive to SB, but it is still in transit today as well. So that means it's probably not unloaded yet.
But I studied and collected about 9 different members' travel times by train to Cali. I'd say the average is about 20-25 days to get to the dealer from dispatch. But only a few had a wait longer than about a day at SB offloading to get on a truck, and truck transits are usually 1 day.

At least your SAs knew the X5 is made in South Carolina. Recently I inquired about an X5 that was in transit and according to the SA it was coming from Germany and it was going to take several months. And don’t even bother asking them leasing questions because even the best of the best are hit or miss.

So mine departed Kansas City on November 19th, which is now 19 days ago and it still says in transit and BMW genius sees it was scheduled to arrive on Nov 28 in SB, but shows no updated status that it has arrived. Seems like a really long time...

Did you ever get the BoL to track via BNSF/Norfolk Southern call in line?

I know, I was being sarcastic! The traincar I'm tracking left Austell, GA at some point overnight, and has been very slowly plodding north through Tennessee - last seen in Nemo, TN, SW of Wartburg, TN.

I've heard people say that the Genius has more up to date information, I'm not sure how that happens, unless at one of the IM yards they move the vehicle to a different traincar?

In any event, it departed a day late from Spartanburg, due in KCMO on 08 Dec, with a ETA in Renton (Orillia) yard on 24 Dec. We'll see...if it makes it, it'll be close.

Easy way to do it without having to remember all the numbers and wait...

Make a contact in your phone, name it whatever you wish and set the contact number to: 18004972919,,,,2,,,,xxxx#,,yyyyyy#,,,1

Replace xxxx with the container alpha characters (i.e., TTGX = 8849) and yyyyyy with the numeric characters. Given railcar TTGX112233, the whole string would be 18004972919,,,,2,,,,8849#,,112233#,,,1

Now you can just dial the contact as per usual and not have to provide any input, just dial and wait for it to read back the last known location. It helps if you are checking a few times a day.. or more.. as it seems some of us might be doing

actually your xxxx characters, all you have to do is enter the first letter, the 'T', in this case you enter an '8'#, then at the prompt enter the numbers.
