While the transmission can be forced into neutral, it's not an easy mechanical task as it is done from underneath. Some brands using this transmission have made it easier, but BMW has not.
In my case, I’m guessing that the 12V batteries were not getting properly charged for quite some time. I ran a Bimmerlink error check in September, just exploring the App. I got the following potentially related error messages, but didn’t know enough to pay attention to them:

“07 Accumulator-management electronics
4 errors
21F03F: HVS SBOX - temperature reading invalid
21F256: SME: Power reset SBOX by SME
21F310: HVS: SBOX - Extended SBOX diagnostic information on contactor errors
21F311: HVS: SBOX - Extended SBOX diagnostic information on pre-loading errors”

I just looked up SBOX and it seems to be a Battery Safety Box. So, something was probably going on then. I didn’t think to ask my dealer what error codes they got when they were finally able to communicate with the car.

I’ve experienced a couple gremlins this past month. one was NO SIGNAL on the control display on one morning startup. an iDrive reboot fixed it. the other was failure to recognize both key fobs despite new cell button batteries. a quick disconnect of the 12V battery fixed it.

I’m 3 years in and 24k miles. I have 3y/30k-mile maintenance service next week, so I’ll bring it up then and show them this

Any 12v battery issues found when you had your 30,000 mile service?

thanks for the reminder.

no voltage issues on my 12V batteries when they were checked. SA said they found a code related to the NO SIGNAL error, and BMW said it was related to software, so I was updated to 11/2023.xx. I’ve had no further buggy-type behavior since
