Does Anyone buy the Extended and/or Maintenance Warranty

I'm still looking at the 2022 X5. He said he could give me 30% discount on a car and maintenance warranty. Comes out to an extra $110 a month for 60 months. When I bought my 2013 X5, the brakes and rotors went out a year later costing $2800. This package warranty covers everything from oil changes to mechanical. Does anyone get these?

Interested as well, but only in actual repair coverage. Silly to pay 2800 for new brakes when you can do it yourself easily for under 500.

Nope. The value simply isn’t there.

Just say no. Put the $110/month in a savings account and use it if you need to. Those plans are a huge profit for the dealer which means the probability of you coming out ahead is really slim.

But you don't specify which plans you're considering. Maintenance and Warranty are two different things. I'd never buy the maintenance. If you're real lucky and need brakes in that window, you may save a few hundred bucks but probably not. Warranty is about piece of mind. Some people need it. But the chance of a major failure is still pretty slim in the first 7 years/100k miles.

$110/month for 60 months = $6600. If I thought I would have to spend that on a car for maintenance and repairs in five years I would probably not consider that make/model car.

It would be great if you could break down a bit what you would be getting for $6,600 on both programs. Can you elaborate on terms, deductible, yrs, miles, etc. Not enough info to assist with an answer.

It's basically $5200 for the next 3years 10 months. It covers all the mechanical and maintenance needed ( oil changes , spark plugs, screen issues., everything. I was saying my last X5 need all new rotors and pads and costed about $2600 a year after I bought it. It wasn't CPO.It seems like a lot but just knowing you will pay nothing if something happens for $120 a month is nice. I would buy a CPO X5 if I did, but you just never know. There is so much technology in these BMWs.

Financially it likely will not be worth it. If you get value from knowing that you won't have to pay should something break that is covered, then it may be worth it to you.

I did when I bought my used 2019 X5 with 36k miles from the BMW dealer.

I’ve already used it to fix the instrument cluster.

Never own a german car made in the past 10 years without a warranty. BMW's are now known for their reliability, but there is too much to go wrong as these cars age for me to feel comfortable without a warranty. Just my 2 cents

Anyone use any aftermarket companies? Maybe I'll check around.

From your description they were offering you a third party warranty as no one BMW product offers that coverage.

If you want a vehicle service contract (BMW's name for an extended warranty) then shop around for one. You have another two years or so to buy it, just needs to be done prior to the new vehicle warranty expiring.

As far as Ultimate Care+ goes, if for some reason you want that then you can also shop around for it. Rarely is it the least expensive option to but it from the dealer you are getting your vehicle from.

I can give you some folks that I recommend should yo want to shop around.

I'm about to get an X5 50e and will buy the extended warranty. Yes I know it's probably not EV positive, but it will give me peace of mind. Especially given the tech in this car and the current issues.

I'm coming from Audi and I always bought the extended warranty from some dealer 1000s of miles away which would have it 30pct less than the MSRP. I think I saw another thread about a similar BMW dealer offering similar discounts.

The plus is that you are here getting advise. I wouldn’t purchase a BMW from a non-BMW dealership. You should have some original warranty left over and then they give you a CPO warranty for the addition year. Then you can get another 2 years CPO wrap on top of that for a reasonable fee. If you drive a lot, maybe a Maintenace plan. I wouldn’t do it, but you can do you what your needs are.

The BMW warranty was rather pricey. For less than the discounted price offered by forum sponsors I was able to get a Fidelity Platinum warranty for 7 yrs and 70k miles (from the date of warranty purchase). My local BMW service rep spoke very highly of Fidelity - I checked with him before I purchased the plan.

Also I have had a Zurich warranty on a Porsche in the past and it was also very good.

If the BMW warranty was just a little more I would have gone that route but it was running nearly $6k for what amounted to 2 years of coverage (in addition to the CPO). That warranty (CPO wrap) also upgrades the coverage of the CPO warranty itself from what I understand.

Cheers,
X

I suppose it depends on each person’s annual mileage, but generally I don’t understand where that conclusion comes from. I was quoted $3,749 to bring the maintenance coverage (which includes brakes, oil, filters, wiper blades, among other items) for 5yr/75k miles. For 6yr/100k miles the price is $4,750. With brakes alone costing $3,300 it almost pays for itself right there. What am I missing?

Agree it depends on the circumstances. I never have a car long enuf to worry about brakes, etc. But one must be committed to keeping the vehicle for 5+ years. Many of us think we will but end up trading earlier therefore wasting money albeit with good intentions. I could say I’m keeping my new car for 5 years but I know full well I won’t. That’s why dealers push these programs and make lots of $$ on them. If you’re committed then ok. Most of us aren’t.

I plan to consider it closer to the new vehicle warranty expiration for my 45e. I know the average return is negative (compared to just paying for repairs), but I might pay extra to avoid a potential large bill; unsure at this point. I would probably only pay for a coverage plan which included the hybrid and software components, though (I think there's a greater chance of large cost failures there than with the mechanical components).

A couple thoughts on replacing brakes, since many people are quoting this as a justification. First, brake service should not be $3000; that may be what BMW quotes, but it's absolutely possible to get less expensive brake service. If you need to replace the entire assembly that might be a lot more, but that's rare (in my experience). Also, hybrids wear brakes much slower than non-hybrids (due to regenerative braking); I wouldn't expect to replace brake pads on a hybrid any more frequently than 50k miles, unless you drive you vehicle particularly "aggressively". This is not a cost I would worry about disproportionately, but of course YMMV.

My personal guestimations, fwiw: you can assume the wholesale cost for a service warranty is ~25% more than what the dealership assumes the actual average covered service/repair costs will be, and they will mark it up from there (so they can offer you "discounts"). There is absolutely no normal case where a dealership would offer you a plan which costs less than the expected cost for covered services. Such plans are only potentially "worth it" if the cover unexpected repairs which may have large costs, and you are essentially paying a premium for insurance against those rarities.

I only consider it because of what I happened to me 2 years into my 2013 X5 50I. Rotors and pads were $2400 or somewhere around there and a few other things. The difference now is I work from home so I only put about 6K miles a year. I have 2 years to until my warranty expires so I have time to think about it. I just feel like something will happen in 2 years.

Unless you are really hard on the brakes or do a ton of city driving you should be fine. It seems like most will get 75k - 10k miles out of them. I'm at 62k miles and have 8mm on my rears and 7mm on my fronts.

Don't confuse the two, your warranty will not cover the brakes that would be ultimate care. If you even think you are going to get it then it is best you buy it as soon as possible to get the most service from it. If you wait then it costs a lot more and you miss the service that you could have had.

For what it’s worth….. Bought service and 7 year 125k warranty on my 2020 x5 40i. Have 76 miles and had brakes replaced and a couple of issues. Plan to keep the car for a while. So for me it’s been worth it with the peace of mind. My dealership also has done a great job helping / servicing the vehicle
