With that said, called the dealer. We live 2 hours away from closest dealer. Sent them photos of the sunroof. They said that a BMW rep needs to fly down to take a look at it. That would probably take "about" two weeks. It would then take about another 2 weeks to order the parts. If it was determined that a rock didn't cause the damage, it would be covered under warranty. If it isn't covered under warranty, it will be $5,591 to replace.
If the BMW rep determines that it was foreign object damage (FOD), I would be VERY interested in knowing HOW they determined that. Where is the evidence to show something struck the glass?

2024 x5 50e sunroof exploded today while driving down the highway. No other cars, stones, branches or anything around me. Called the person who sold me the car right away & was told to bring it in immediately & would be given a loaner. I certainly hope this is covered under warranty. Scary!

Look at the similarity of the hole position and the cracks in those last 2 breakage reports.

Looks like it's cracking where the two panels meet and then breaking towards the center. Probably when the glass is too heavy to support the cracking.

This is a security issue! It’s a Shame BMW does not use laminated glass in sunroofs!! This should be mandatory to all manufacturers! I had four months ago my 535d the sunrood shatered by a small stone sent by a truck i was crusing about 40 miles/hour and i had luck because i was with sunglasses, glass all over the place…it cutted the leather in the seat and center console.. and i could not proceed trip because glass flyed all over.. so much tecnology for everything and they use basic unsafe glass at all speed, from the stone age… a shame..

This is crazy for a business worth $Billion$ of dollars! Fixing the sunroof amounts to what, .0000000000000001 fraction of a percent of their Top,...and Bottom line! Just plain crazy.

This appears to have developed quite recently. If that is the case, then perhaps the word has not gotten around to the dealers. One would have to suspect that a batch of the glass was not made to spec and installing it is loading it with a tension that is only released by breakage.

At that price, I would be waiting on the rep and I so wish we could order these cars without sunroof. I would never order one. I don’t think I’ve ever opened mine. Personally I like it darker inside I even forget sometimes it’s even there until I wash it. Specially, with the dark shade that covers the sunroof you don’t even know it’s there .

This is a scary issue. Not sure what to think at this time other than I hope this does not happen to me.

The same thing happened to my wife and I on Friday in our 600 mile 2024 50e: driving along, empty road (climbing CA-50 to Lake Tahoe), bang. The rear (nonmoving) portion of the moonroof was shattered, but completely still in place. Currently waiting to hear from BMW as to whether they believe it should be covered under warranty - if they do not, escalation is a must as this is an unquestionable defect.

That's what - five occurrences in the last week, reported in this thread alone?

I disagree, not on a sun roof — would have to be hit by a large rock. Much more likely to be a thermal stress fracture due to a manufacturing flaw in the glass…that is actually fairly common and effects all manufacturers. Look for signs of buckling on the glass if it is still there.

Just received a call from BMW corporate today. They are declining to cover under warranty because the car has 12,000 miles on it and if it was a defect, it would have likely happened sooner. There really isn't any science to that, and I mentioned that others have had their sunroofs covered under warranty. He said he was going to look into it, and get back to me.

With that said, if you know of any posts where people had it actually covered under warranty, please share them so I can provide those links. I am so disappointed this isn't getting taken care of!

Well, unfortunately, the bottom line is they know you have insurance and that your car insurance will cover it and that takes them off the hook

I had something similar with the rear window of my 45e when it was a few months old. My car was parked, I got in and closed my door and the rear window shattered. At first BMW said no warranty, in the end they repaired everything under warranty. Also some paint had to be redone because of the shattered glass. Never understood how this rear window just could explode by closing my front door.

Are those crack sunroofs regular one or the one with sky lounge feature?

Situation sounds ripe for government to intercede. Extremely dangerous situation. No tempered or safety glass?
