2024 X5 Not recognizing some speed limit signs

Just changed from 2022 540i to 2024 X5.

X5 recognizes speed limit signs, but it does miss some, too.
(This was never the case with 540i)

Is there any sensitivity setting or adjustment?
Thank you for your input in advance.

There is no user setting for this. However my recommendation would be to leave it for now and see how you get on.

In some situations like direct sunlight it will have issues.

My assisted driving system was malfunctioning with errors (its the same camera thats used for reading speed signs and assisted driving). The dealer installed latest software and then recalibrated the system.

It took them about 200 miles of test driving and 3 days without the car (kept getting errors and failed to recalibrate) and i still dont think its right. The augmented reality view looks all washed out and messed up now. It was much better before they started fiddling with it.

My 2023 X5 has a quirk where if it doesn't see a sign it defaults to 40km in town, whereas the unposted speed limit is always 50km, so it constantly tells me i am driving 10k over the speed limit in red. Not a big deal, but frustrating.

Mercedes had a similar issue with the GLE. It was caused by the camera housing/cover out gassing in the hot sun which deposited a coating on the camera lens…the result is a blurry image. Wonder if the same thing could be happening here?

If you can get access to the camera lens, try cleaning it with some alcohol and a cotton swab.

Thanks for your input.
My dealer said the problem was a program and by re-programming this "was" fixed. There was a recall on the programming which could cause false Check Engine signs, too.

I think you'll find that it stays on the last sign that it saw. The country roads I drive don't have posted limits but the general rule is an 80km limit outside of built up areas. I often drive with the car still indicating a 40 or 50 limit from the last sign in a town.
My wife's Miata does much better using map data instead of the camera.

BMW uses both the camera and the map data. The data from the camera has always been the top priority and when it is not available it will use the speed limit from the map data. Last summer they reversed that, by accident supposedly, and the map data was taking priority over the camera. That was fixed in a later version.

Then there would appear to be 2 possible answers to why I can travel many kilometres on county roads with the low speed limit showing. The first would be that it doesn't use the map in Canada. The second would be that the map base is not very good compared to the one in the Miata. The latter might just be the answer as the BMW map doesn't even recognize the street I live on.

I would lean towards the latter. For me I can get out of my driveway and drive a couple of miles before it picks up a speed limit as there are no signs.

I had a 2022 540i which never missed any signs as far as I could remember.
That's why I have a very high expectation of this feature...

I would have the same expectations as you. I can't remember either my X5 or M340i missing a sign.

Mine occasionally shows 20mph after turning a corner onto some Wisconsin back roads, even though there was definitely no 20mph sign anywhere around.

Illinois school speed limits are 20, Wisconsin's are 15, so no idea.

Otherwise pretty accurate, at least when I'm paying attention to speed limits

The whole system is problematic at best. It does pretty good on major roads, but even there it has issues. On multiple laned roads, there are times trucks will block the view of a sign resulting in the system holding the last read sign.

My biggest gripe is school zones. Here they are 20 mph when active which amounts to about 3% of the time over a year. So the majority of the time, it's telling me the speed limit is 20 mph when it isn't. And there are issues at the end of the school zones. Some just have an END SCHOOL ZONE sign which doesn't reset the system so it will show the speed limit as 20 mph until the next sign. The one nearest my place has the END SCHOOL ZONE sign butted directly above a 35 mph sign. The system correctly reads this sign about 20% of the time.

What scares me is the politicians that want to use these systems to actually limit the speed of your car. It's a recipe for disaster.

Tombstone, AZ. That is apparently an 80 mph speed limit sign. At least according to my X5. https://maps.app.goo.gl/pWj9cfz9g79Rc5V57

I just did a trip from Houston to Colorado and I did not have any issues with missed signs. Weird.

Mine frequently lists the speed limit, but incorrectly. For example, I live 4 blocks from a school zone but it always shows 20mph school zone on my street.

This was my drive through Florida, Alabama and Georgia last month. The car read everything really well.

I had to constantly keep hitting the "SET" button, (it's set for 8 MPH over when 45 and up and 4 MPH under 45).

The speed sign on the dash would change just as I passed the sign...

I’m facing the same issue since OTA update of iDrive 8.5 to 11/2023.42 - the speed limit does not change according to the signs posted on the roads…

They reversed the logic so it takes the speed limit from the map data first and then the camera. That is supposed to be fixed in a later update.

So even if the camera sees a limit of say 45 mph but map data has 35 mph, the speed limit on the instrument cluster will keep showing 35 mph - is that a correct understanding?
