I do it that way but it'll put itself in P when you shut it off anyway, so I doubt it's mandatory. I also don't normally set the parking brake, so I don't follow instructions either

I just turn it off, the P button isn't easy to find. If you use Auto Hold, it's automatically putting the vehicle in park for you anyway.

I come to a complete stop, while my foot is still on the brake, I put the vehicle in N then set the parking brake and release my foot off the brake to let the vehicle settle (especially important on an incline) then I put my foot back on the brake and then put the vehicle in P. This way there is no pressure on the transmission.

This has been addressed in another post too and a number of people do not follow those steps, including me. I just pull the parking brake and then hit the start/stop button. I find the parking button to be quite annoying. Other posters mentioned that they just turned the vehicle off in previous versions of the X5 too.
