Funny noise when steering wheel adjusts to driver's saved position

See video, about 1/4 of the time when I start my 2021 X5, and the steering wheel adjusts position automatically, I get this strange noise. Not sure how to describe it, listen for yourself, a vibration or something, it's pretty loud and annoying. Mainly I'm wondering if I should have the dealer look at this, see if it's a defect that needs to be repaired or might lead to failure.

Anyone heard this?

Yup, almost every BMW F15/F16, G05/6/7 - X5/6/7 owner has heard this noise.

Mine is intermittent - maybe once in 2 months and more so in the winter or cold.

It shouldn't occur all the time but when your electronic adjustable steering wheel stops adjusting - will require a visit to the dealer.

When you notice that you can lift the flap above the steering column that's normal - as it's a cover for the column and adjusts based on saved steering wheel position:

Yep, had it on my '20 M50i. Got a new one installed a couple of months ago under warranty. Steering actually got stiffer afterwards, which I'm totally cool with.

Guess I'll take it in. I even lifted that flap to see if that eliminated it, and of course, it did not.

I have the same noise on my 2020 X5M. What i did is if you adjust the steering wheel out all the way and open the top plastic cover you will see the shiny metal steering shaft. I would drip some Krytox oil there and work the system by adjusting it all the way in and out several times. That usually fixes the noise for a month or two before i have to do it again.

Have the same issue, went back to the service center and got it fix........but I can still hear the noise from time to time. Pretty annoying.

*service rep. told me is some kind of loose screw but I don’t see it from the report so

Those who had the steering column repaired, did it stay repaired?

It's a minor annoyance, I'm more interested in not only getting it fixed if possible, but to make sure that it's not the start of a failure of a motor or something right after the warranty runs out.

BMW has bulletin SIB32 04 20 that addresses this issue. The bulletin first suggests an adjustment to the worm gear mechanism that controls the column movement. When this adjustment doesn't resolve the issue, next step is to replace the steering column. Whether the replacement column has resolved this issue is unknown. Part number hasn't changed for the G05 so it's anyone's guess.

Just got my car back. Noise is gone. Also, I had some noise simply by putting force on the steering wheel. That’s gone, too. Steering feels great.

Here’s the work order.

I have the same issue on my 2019×5. The dealer said that they need to add grease to the steering column. It would be over $400 to do that. I don’t think that’s gonna fix the problem. Can you tell me what actually fixed the problem on your car? Thank you.

I have a 2022 45/e. It developed the same problem a little more than a year in -- groaning noise when the steering wheel extended to the driving position. It made no noise at any other time. It got progressively louder with time until I couldn't ignore it.

The dealer greased the column and that did the trick. It was under warranty so no charge. However, a year later it has started to make the noise again. Just faintly and intermittently so far, not consistent enough to take it back in. I still have a couple of warranty years left but I'm concerned about what happens after that.
