Cryptonomicon first if you have never read anything. (Parallel timelines - Bletchley park and 1990s silicon valley)
Snow Crash (post-modern, future cyberpunk)
Reamde (no, not a typo) (Virtual Reality gaming crypto-currency)
The Baroque Cycle (like 3 books averaging about 1,100 pages each) Follows developments of society and technology (and currency) from American Revolution, the French Revolution, and the onset of the industrial revolution
The Mongoliad (basically an alternate story of a group of post-crusades Christians in the time of Genghis Kahn.)

Dense material, VERY interesting.

Have any of you read Stephenson - specifically either the Baroque Cycle of Reamde? Interested in your thoughts on some of the financial themes - from regional currencies, to unified currencies, to commodity backed-currencies, to non-backed currencies, to virtual and crypto currencies... curious how interesting his thoughts are to be people who are for smarter than I am in the field. To me, it is probably "pearls before swine"... interested what the non-swine community has to say.

It is really an ingenious design. The dark area around the Lambert Projection of the earth at center, is actually a shaded sapphire disk that rotates and is an accurate representation of which of those timezones are in darkness vs the ones in light. It is actually a really neat complication.

The illusion here - currency and commodity values are just that...an illusion.

Regardless of what standard is used - very few people have 'real control' to insulate for fluctuations of supply/demand.

Prime example of this: Milk

When fuel was $4/gallon, milk cost X price.

When fuel cost fell to $2/gallon, milk still cost X price.

The commodity of fuel fell by $2/gallon, but the cost of the related commodity did not...
