I found it's either a manual enablement and it's only good for like 20 seconds before and 20 seconds after when you start capturing. There is also auto capture if the car can sense if you were in an accident. Again that is limited to 20 seconds before your capture start time and 20 seconds after.

btw the 20 seconds and the selection of the cameras are settings in the drive recording app.
