Maybe the roof rails are deleted because of wind noise at speeds in excess of 155 mph.

"Full M treatment does not suit SUVs". - suspension too stiff and unforgiving - torque - too high up in the rev range - weight too high, center of gravity - too high - loss of some utility to off road, carry passengers in comfort - CAN NOT TAKE THEM TO THE TRACK AND USE THAT M TUNE Look at this review of x3M - i would not buy this car. https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1648692 X3 M40 or x5 M50 - is aggressive enough for me - for everything else - there is M2 |

Most driving clubs that i instruct with do not allow SUVs in any driving groups. They are just too big, too cumbersome and not mix well with track prepared cars. You might sneak one in for a parade lap but not for serious driving. I saw instructors goofing around in x5M for 5 minutes - but that's the extent of it. so the short answer - you are not allowed to bring them in. On the second note - the SUV will not last on the track very long. it will cook the brakes and crack rotors very quickly. It will chew up the tires and sidewalls. Plus it will not be much fun when Mazda Maiatas are zooming around you in every corner and you can only do straights. The beauty of M cars - was always that they were dual purpose cars. Comfortable and practical enough for the street and usable for track days. What I'm saying looks like the super performance SUVs are diminishing both spectrums of that dual purpose - No track and no street comfort. |

I don't agree with the both spectrum POV. I would guess not the majority of owners take any M car to the track. Yes I am sure there are plenty out there but would put my bet its like a Ford Raptor most don't see what they are designed for.... I for one take mine to the strip which I would say the X5M will do great at. I test drove an M4 and M5 and neither seem to have what I would call Comfort.... So just my opinion here but I think if I were to think of buying an M badge (I am waiting to order my M8) I don't put comfort as a need.... To me that is like saying I want a powerful engine with 8 cylinders and wanting 30MPG or more... LOL I just don't put those two things together while thinking about performance and comfort. However my 50i nails both very well but its my DD. My sports vehicle I only want it to do one thing perfectly that is go FAST!!!.. lol

Even if you don't care about the rails it is important to have them. Eventually. when you go to sell the car any potential buyer will use the lack of rails as a negotiating point.
But I think the rails are an important part of the look of the X5; I wouldn't want an X5 without them even though I will probably never use them. My guess now is that you will make the dealer build another X5 for you or you will switch brands in frustration. Best of luck in whatever you end up doing and we will all be interested in the result. |

Has anyone in California received their M50i? Mine arrived at the VPC on 8/13 and current status is still unknown. Mygarage says it is still at the port, while BMW Genius and the dealer think it is enroute to the SoCal VDC. The car sat at the VPC for over 4 weeks before moving which is unusual.
Makes me wonder if BMW was trying to retrofit the missing roof rails on the M50i's at the VPC before they got released for shipment? |

Anyone cross shop the 2020 X5 M50 with the 2020 Range Rover Sport Supercharged (the 525hp version just for clarity)?
I am really torn between the two. I know the X5M50 is the "better" overall car - slightly faster, better infotainment, etc - but the RRSS just has more of that gotta have it factor and they are somewhat less common to see on streets around CT (even though we have a lot of RRs we have way more X5s). The other thing is the exhaust note, the RRSS sounds incredible where as the X5M50 to me at least sounds good, but not great. Interested in other thoughts. Price wise they are literally almost identical when both have the right options. Making decision very soon. Thanks guys.
