I got the email too. Emailed my SA, he said he update could be done without coming in and even sent me a YouTube video link on how to do it.

So I got home and checked, the car didn’t acknowledge any need for a software update nor do I see the eligibility in the Connected App. I checked and my software is 03/2019.60. Is that the latest version out?

Your SA is not telling you the truth, either on purpose or out of ignorance. As mentioned in the email, OTA updates are not yet available and you need to take it in to get updated.

Same here. No issues other than no cornering lights. I'm hesitant to do anything. Took delivery in February and have original software version.

I'm guessing current code is somehow broken so can't take the OTA (when I go to check for software update, it just "searching" indefinitely).
BMW has to do regression testing, which means testing of all configurations of earlier hardware and software builds to see how they handle the "update". In some cases they find incompatibilities so they disqualify certain configurations and leave those to the tried and true ISTA/P programming session at the dealer.

I suspect you are correct. It seems that there were a few OTA candidates selected earlier this year, and I suspect that BMW learned some things from that experience - hence this offer of a "free update" to address those issues which may have hindered the OTA experiment.

This OTA thing is all new to BMW. They're clearly treading lightly so they have a chance to learn and tweak.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall at one of their meetings discussing planning, corporate wants/needs, etc. It must be a real sh*t show. Tug o war!

Hey Tlon have you been able to test anything since the update? Hope everything is working properly for you. I’m bringing mine in Monday and since the beginning I’m hoping for the best.

Did anyone in Canada get this email.

The X5 has been at the dealership the entire week to get the seat replaced, trim replaced (seat and trim damaged from software update) rim repaired and I pleaded with them to get me an update as I'm determined some of this safety stuff doesn't work. So hopefully they got this update to apply to the car. I like the X3 rental but it's not an X5.

Took my car in this morning for the first servicing. The 10,000 mile. The dealer is going to do the upgrade and said it might fix a lot of the error codes I keep getting. We will see. They told me not to expect it back till Monday afternoon.

I got the email... thank god almighty they've got the YELP ratings feature fixed.

I'm serious, that's one of two things they hyped in the email. BMW market share is going to plummet.

So far, so good. Other than the annoying route preview bug I mentioned above, I haven't had many issues. The one other thing that seems odd is that the brightness control on the camera seems not to working quite as well (changing the setting doesn't do much if anything).

It also took 24 hours for the apps to be properly updatedto show Experience, Caring Car, and Climate Rules.

Unlike some folks here, my auto highbeams still work, no issues with any of the PDC (in fact it seems a bit more active, if anything), and I was able to test active drive assistance and it worked fine. I was concerned with the latter because my first try after leaving the dealership sent my impact collision warning off before slowing down (I slammed on the brakes). Seems fine now but I haven't tested it at a higher speed since then.

I've also been able to reboot the iDrive while in motion, which apparently has gone away for some. Given all the bugs, that would stink.

Still wish they'd fix this route preview bug.

One note, I don't use CarPlay, so I don't know if the connectivity issues have been fixed.

That is not the case for me, I had an full OTA update a few months ago which needed some input from me, and have had another one which was seamless because one day I had experience mode, climate rules and a few other apps just show up out of the blue. I haven’t had my car in the dealership since January. Maybe I’m their guinea pig

Yes, we, at least I, haven't been counting your experience since it seems like you were a test. In general, OTA updates have not been made available. You are a guinea pig.

It's weird, I'm not usually the one to be picked for a test mule but at least it all worked out for me with zero real problems with my g05 unlike a lot of others.
I've been waiting for a real reason to take it to the dealership because my paint is starting to come off my tailpipe driving me nuts, but it just isn't happening.

@wrickem, would you mind sharing your software version? It would be interesting to see how yours compares with the version BMW is deploying. I hope to have my upgrade scheduled this week.

His OTA update was back in June so it is about 4 or 5 versions behind keeping in mind there was a major version release.
