Only time will tell. I'd still recommend getting into a '25 though--if for no other reason than they've already torn the vehicle apart multiple times (in my case, at least), and a model year newer will hold its value a bit longer.

For some reason it seems the issue has to do with hybrid mode going long distances. Car drives fantastic, actually the best driving car I have ever had, but the system gets confused somehow and then the cel. Seems like a software glitch to me but like bmw, I have no clue what is really causing it. We’ll see what they say this time.
My wife drives around 55 miles daily in hybrid mode, and we haven't had any issues at all. Her X5 typically has zero miles left on electric every day she gets home.

There are no PHEV specialists available on the phone from BMW. The people available are clueless and mostly ignorant. They even have a Genius/EV department, also useless.

This is my wife's daily driver also. She drives about 36-40 miles round trip daily on pure electric. No issues since the valve was replaced at 1200miles - going on 7000 miles now. We have only gassed the car once since ownership back in December 2023

When I drive it, I only use sport mode, a sweet ride to say the least. The car is just perfection, when it is working of course.

Regrettably, this is not the first instance of this issue. My previous X5 50e experienced the same problem, leading to a buyback from BMW. Despite this prior experience, I opted to purchase another X5 50e, a decision I am now reconsidering due to the recurrence of this issue.
The dealer fixed the problem two weeks ago by replacing the expansion valve. But yesterday, the check engine light came on again, and this time I got a drivetrain malfunction. I dropped the car off at the dealership today, and I'm waiting to hear what the problem is.

I'm really fed up with BMW. I regret buying the same car a second time. I don't love this car anymore because we're always taking it to the dealership for repairs.

That is crazy. Really sorry to hear this.

Might be a great time to send a letter to a BMW executive, they are posted somewhere in this thread. Many of us are ticked at BMW for not supporting the 50e.

Been in the shop a week and the app says my car has been locked and not moved. Thinking the sme part is very hard to get still. Wonder if I will be in the camp of having the car at the shop for over a month like some here. I have serious doubts that the new sme will not solve the cel problem I have. Haven’t heard a thing.

This is unacceptable, start talking to the GM and request a buyback or a new car.

Same here, don't waste time and start requesting a new car.

Guess I can now add to the people with CELs on their 2024 50e. Car has 2300 miles on it. Took the car in yesterday to fix a software issue with the clock and navigation system. The dealer reprogrammed the car and everything was fine. While picking it up yesterday afternoon noticed the CEL on and immediately drove back into the service area. They took it and today said the car won’t be ready any sooner than next Tuesday. The problem code indicated that the module on the battery pack was bad. They are overnighting the part but will take until next Tuesday to get everything back together. They aren’t real confident that will fix the problem so we’ll see next week.

Got the CEL on last week after 7500miles or so. No driving issues. Got to the dealer on Friday and they found two codes. Been doing updates for a few days and been driving it. Awaiting word on pickup. Fingers crossed it’s g2g. Was happy we never had anything… then boom just random..

Updated the “DME”. They drove the car over 60miles within two days. No more cel. Hoping for the best. Will update with any changes..

CEL. Has anyone actually had this issue fixed?

So I'm taking my 50e to the dealer tomorrow for my third CEL in two months. First time they told me gas cap, second time AC fault.

I assume I really have the dreaded CEL issue everyone else is dealing with. My question is... has anyone actually had a fix done that worked?

I'm afraid the dealer will just keep trying random things if I can't point them to actual success stories with this issue.

(crazy that I have to try and help them)

A new valve should fix the issue if they can get it, otherwise you can request a buyback and get another car.

From what we ave seen, in many instances their valve needs to be replaced multiple times. I don't think anyone has had the issue after having the SME replaced though.

I had the SME replaced twice before the valve replacement.

X5 in the shop for 2 weeks now and don’t think it has been touched much. App says it is always locked and in the same location. I am not sure they know what to do with it. Don’t even hear from the service rep unless I reach out first (1 time) but it is clear they don’t have an answer just yet. I think it might end up a buyout. Appears BMW is stumped by what is causing the issue.

I really like the i5 loaner. BMW did a great job with this car.
